Survey: Your Handgun Battery

Hey, just wondering what people do around here.

Do you guys have one system--1911, Glock whatever and have a fullsize and a dinky backup? Or carry two duplicates? Or two systems like a 1911 on one side and a J-frame on the other? Or don't even care? Just curious to see what people are doing.

Right now I have a Beretta 92G for everything and a P7M8 for weddings and funerals. As a mental exercise I'm thinking about switching to a 1911 or Glock system because I'm not satisfied with any of Beretta's compact offerings and would like the big and little systems to be compatible with each other.

I'm sure I forgot something as an option in the poll but select the closest to what you do...or something.

I like the "one system" concept, and have a full-size Glock 17 that stays on my nightstand or gets carried when it can be concealed, and a Glock 26 that gets carried most other times. I also have a few "special purpose" handguns, such as a Browning Buckmark for plinking and target practice, a Kel-Tec P-32 for when I can't conceal any other gun (and for hiking, when every ounce counts and the likelihood of confrontations is low), and a Ruger Birdshead Vaquero in .45 Colt for general woods carry.

A trio of USP Compacts...2 in 9, one in .357Sig and a pair of Sig 239s..again, one in 9, one in .357 Sig. These must do for all applications. My gun money has been spent..... Zebulon

In the shop I carry a full size Gold Cup and a smaller backup.

When I leave the shop I generally add a LW commander or another full size 1911.

Tend to ''mix it''! Full size re P series (95 or 97) and now tending toward the Thunder/P-3AT area for small.

This tho does not take into account the snub.

Most ''at ease'' tho in fact with P series .. or snub. Not yet fully enough ''aquainted'' with the .380 ''lil guns''.

monday-friday a 2" 15-2 goes into my waistband until i get to work then it's locked in my locker. Weekends it my 3" 65-3 or 3" 24-3 in a belt holster.

Weeelll, kinda limited on choices but I went with two systems. A full size 1911 is the constant, Different backups range from a 2nd fullsize to a compact (Bulldog), and others usually dictated by dress rather than feeling.
Basically its the more clothes I have on, the more guns I have on.;)

I am of the opinion that you can carry whatever you can use. My bedside/big holster gun is a (.45 cal.)Glock 21. My primary carry gun is a (9mm)Glock 26. My pocket/deep carry gun is a (.380 cal.)P-3AT.

My secondary bedside gun is an old (but BEAUTIFUL) S&W M19 (.357) with a 6" tube. My secondary carry gun is a Colt Commander 1911. I used to carry a (.38)S&W (J Frame) Model 36.

With any one of the guns, I can hit my target. When I pick up a Glock, it feels like a Glock and I use it accordingly. When I pick up a 1911, my muscle memory knows to wipe the saftey off before I squeeze the trigger. When I pick up a revolver, it feels like a revolver the instant I pick it up.

The trick is to know the "FEEL" of each and every one of your weapons. Dryfire practice aids in this endeavor to the extreme. Learn to use them "with your eyes closed" (Not aiming of course) and you can use whatever you like, when you like.

The weapons that you have already are much better than average. You may consider scrapping (or transitioning, I like the Beretta, for range use) the Beretta in favor of a a SA or Short DAO auto. I had a problem with DA/SA autos myself, but that was personal.

If you sell that P7, (I covet it ) I will never forgive you.

BTW, you MUST HAVE a .45 and a .357 in your posession. It is a rule. :D

Go w/ whatever you feel most comfy carrying ;) IF it's your 92G & your P7, so be it! Me, I've got enough to run the spectrum...S&W mod 19 & 60 or I can go USP in Small, Medium or Large! I am liking the idea of a system and the compatibility.

While its best to stick with one system like say a Glock 17 and a 26, I do violate this rule. I carry a 1911 and sometimes carry a Smith 442 Airweight when the 1911 is just too much.

The reason its best to carry one system is due to different controls and trigger actions. For example the reset on a 1911 is very short. If you get used to it then carry a sig some times with a long reset you will have problems. When your firing controlled pairs and fast strings you will not let the trigger out far enough at times and this will cause you to not fire a round. Or if your used to a sig with a long reset you may start slapping the trigger on shorter reset guns. If you carry a point and pull weapon on duty like a Glock but carry a 1911 off duty you may forget to take the safety off. Muscle memory is an important thing.

Another Officer's(LW) I got in 1990
A ParaOrd LDA Companion I got for work in 2002
No doubt, I'll get other 1911's too.
All .45 acp, all Wilson mags.
Got a Ciener .22 conversion unit
Got a Mech tech CCU that converts Officer #1 into a patrol carbine
Eventually will get a .460 Rowland Conversion barrel to experiment with.

Tried other's too....over the years...wheel guns, CZ, HK, S&W, Sig, P35's, Ruger, Glock, Taurus, Makarov. All were nice(my lemons were a marlin camp 45, an auto ord 1911A1).

But nothing feels better on my hip, in my hand and fur putting lead on target to me personally. So, in the future,I'll put my money on more 1911's in .45 ACP.

Well, I suppose I'm carrying two different systems, in that I use either a Glock 23 or 27 as my primary, and a S&W 642 as backup(and maybe a Kel-Tec P3AT as a 3rd gun). If I need a more compact primary gun, my Kahr K40 can pinch-hit very well for the Glocks when I'm wearing "fancy-dress" or "business-dress."

However, while the administrative "manual of arms" may differ from auto to revolver, my carry guns all share the same operating mode - consistent DA or "New York-1" Safe-Action trigger pull for every shot, with no safety to manipulate before the first shot. Sorry, sports fans, but for now the 1911 and the 92FS only ride my hip at the range - the Glocks, Kahr, Kel-Tec and Smith will be the gun(s) that accompany me in the "real world."

Voted for two systems. For ME, it has evolved into the following:

Belt carry - Condition One LW 1911 (and once in a while my .40cal BHP)

Pocket carry - DAO firearms. If primary a Kahr P9covert, if BUG a airweight j-frame.

Cocked and locked on the belt, DAO in the pocket.

1911's here. Other than those four i have only one LDA, one wheelgun, and one longarm. Its always the 4" Kimber or Para Companion within reach.

Two systems but each with the same gun. H&K USPC .40 on the right hip. Second gun in a "quick" access safe in my bedroom fitted with Trigicon night sites.

I would eventually like to have a 1911 of some sort, but I don't know if I would carry it, but if I did it would be the only thing I carried, because of having to deal with a safety.

I don't have a design-based system going, I have a manufacturer-based system. A Colt for each purpose:

1860 for open carry
1903 for backup and car trips
1911 for general carry

Full-size 1911 is the primary, if I have to dress down I can go to a Glock 29 or Taurus Ultra-Lite .38.

Although the Glock really isn't any easier to pack than the 1911...

I mostly carry pocket guns (SW 642/KT P3AT) during the week due to my work conditions and lifestyle. If I am somewhere besides home, work or my dad's house(1/8 mi away), I go with belt carry of a FS, which leaves me open to carrying a Glock, CZ, 1911, or revolver. Usually depends on my mood, but I do know that its always either no safety or a normal (i.e., downward motion to take safety off) safety.

Big Brother says I can't carry yet (for another 13 months), but I have 2 HiPowers that I think complement each other very well. The way I have it figured (or if I can't get a good 1911 [that works] by my 21st b-day) I'll use one for carry and the other for a backup/under-pillow gun.

Not that I'm culturally insensitive, of course. :D
