I received an e-mail today from Remington talking about a "revolutionary" new 12 gauge Home Defense ammo called just that "HD"

Has anyone used it?
Does anyone know anything about it?
How is it better than good old 00 Buck for home defense?

overpriced, laughable marketing ploy. avoid it like the plague. it's just bb shot. not on any planet at any time for any reason would I trust it over 00, nor would I shell out the outrageous price for it.

I saw some at Dick's sporting goods today. They had the BB size shot and
also "2X4" shot size both had a 1 1/8" payload in 12ga.

Could anyone explain what 2X4 is?

I read on another board that they use a part tungsten shot material that is denser than lead. They had some at Cabela's last time I went.

Regardless, it is BB shot and cost about $3/round. I can get hevi-shot T size home defense loads for $2/shot or #4 buck for much less than both.

I see the BB and T shots as having some application in thin-walled apartments and such. If that's not a concern, I'd go with #1 or 00.

2x4 has both number 2 shot and number 4 shot in one shell. and who hear actually thinks hornady tap ammo is any more necessary then bulk remington 00 buck? cuse i dont.

It depends on what someone want to get out of their gun. If moderate sized patterns at typical across the room ranges will meet your defensive needs, then any good 00 buck load that runs in the gun will do fine.

But if you might need to s t r e t c h out your buckshot range some- out to 75 feet or a bit more- then you want a tighter patterning load. And since few defensive size barrels (18- 20") have either factory fixed MOD chokes or are fitted with choke tubes, the only way to try and get good tight patterns at longer range is to use premium buckshot.

It just depends on what a given shooter needs to get out of their gun, one size DOES NOT fit all.

Chevyforlife has it right..the 2x4 loading is some #2 and some #4 sized shot...

TAP is some of the tightest shooting buckshot that I've used. It's great stuff!

TAP prints very small, predictable patterns at short ranges and that's what I want my defensive shotgun to do. With bulk stuff (especilally S&B), I tend to get irregular patterns and occassinal stray pellets. I don't like that.

I would recommend #4 buckshot if you can find it. If you can't, I hate to say it but I'd probably recommend steel BB or b type steel shot and not the Remington HD stuff because it's overpriced. Most anything capable of keeping you safe will have a good amount of penetration, even the steel stuff. I really hate to recommend steel in a defense application but anything lead will be pretty big (buckshot, slugs) for those paper thin apartment walls.

I might recommend reduced recoil 00 or 1 buck but I still believe it has a hefty amount of penetration.
