Smith & Wesson .38 Special I.D. ??

This is my grandfathers pistol - he got it from his uncle in the early 50's. It has a 5" barrel fixed sights and is # S 984673.

Any idea what model this is? Any help would be appreciated!

It's a Post War S&W Military & Police produced in the late late 1940's. Later became a model 10.
