And the Rifle.

this twist gets me just a bit..

I'm thinking that the gentleman that I bought it from got the twist confused with the barrel length, it is a 32" barrel .. but with a 1:28 am I confined to sabot rounds?

He had no books, no recommendations on grains other than he thought he used 100 grains of the Pyrodex in it.

$350.00 and He was super nice enough to deliver 3 hours west of him..

YOU DIDN'T POST A DROOL BUCKET WARNING!!! You will have to spend hours and hours shooting that poor rifle to find out what load it likes best. Are you sure you want to invest the time. Tell ya what. I will take it off your hands and relieve you of that onerous burden.:D p.s. Your acquisition is one of a kind, enjoy! Good Luck!

Actually that twist will shoot patched round balls with good accuracy if you keep the loads below 70 gr ffg; I believe you'll find the best rb groups down closer to 50 gr ffg, however.

As Das Jaeger said, conical rounds should work just fine between 50 and 90. Just where the best load will be depends entirely on the weight and type of projectile and the lube used.

muchos gracias ! ..

now if it will quit raining in central Texas long enough to go to the farm or to the range..

The previous owner told me that at with the load he shot, the 370 Maxi posted in the picture put 4 rounds touching at 40 yards. I'm hoping to go a bit further out than that.. 50 yards is my max with my bow.. I'm hoping to extend just a bit further..

ya thunk?

I've had the holy black fever since High school.. Dad wouldn't let me get a pistol until I turned 18.. but my uncle was into black powder and he bought me my first 51 Navy I shot that thing up.. I grew up into modern arms and I've got a fine collection of them but something was always calling me back to the traditional ways.. I got into archery.. went through 3 bows the first 2 years.. finally felt I was ready to hunt. First time out with a bow I took a 10 point at 18 yards. 10 more deer fell through the years to my arrows.. compound and recurve. I finally had a chance earlier this year to get back into the good graces of the BP world.

I didn't have a fine bunch of folks that could convene and converse with different ideas like this.. unless I went down to the feed store and sat around the heater.. you know the one that's too hot if you are 3 feet away, but too cold if you are 4 feet away..

thanks guys, I appreciate learning from you..

I'm hoping that you're able to shoot some patched round balls [PRB's] from this barrel at least for target shooting.
Someone recently posted about how well their Knight inline shot PRB's at 30 yards with 777.
Hopefully you're barrel will be able to shoot a wide variety of projectiles.

You really shouldn't count out shooting any kind of projectile including saboted bullets.
Some conicals are heavy and produce more recoil.
There's some new precision made conicals based on the minie design.
And some flat base conicals shoot better using wool wads under them.

There's the Powerbelt bullets with a plastic skirt that are easy to load and come in many styles and weights.

Saboted bullets usually shoot very well from a clean barrel. .50 caliber sabots are sized to shoot .40 - .458 caliber bullets, and there's others that are extra narrow and designed to be easy to load.

You have a beautiful gun and should rightly be proud of it. The 1:28 twist rate will work with patched round balls even though they prefer a much slower twist rate. The 1:28 twist rate is intended for conicals.

I used the Greenhill formula to calculate he best length of bullet for that caliber and twist rate. The result is a bullet measuring 0.62 inches in length. I did not calculate what the weight of that bullet would be. I assumed that your muzzle velocity would be under 1800 fps. It is highly unlikely that you would exceed that with a muzzleloader so it was a safe assumption. If you are interested, you can find the Greenhill formula online. Just Google "Greenhill formula". It will give you a good explanation of it and its limitations. You may have use of it in the future. I keep a bunch of these formulae at hand for when I need to calculate something. They are fun and informative but each has its limits.
A very good book to get for your library is "Understanding Ballistics" by Robert A. Rinker.

If your in southern Indiana, you should be at Friendship right now. Not on
the computer posting on fourms. I have a excuse, I'm in Kansas City 550
miles away.

That seems awful short for such a fast twist in a .50.
I came up with 1.34" for v< 1800 fps and 1.61" for v>1800 fps. using Greenhill's formula.
