I'm sending my 617 back to S&W to fix loose lock up after about 20,000 rounds through it over the years.

While there, is there any sense in having the crown recut? I'm very careful when cleaning the bore, and I use a protective brass guide, but who knows - maybe I nicked it once or twice.

Is there any downside to having it recut as a precautionary measure while the revolver is already at S&W?

Is there anything else that I should ask S&W to check on this revolver?

Is it broke? Is it getting less accurate for you?

If not, I wouldn't mess with it.

Agreed. If accuracy hasn't degraded, you haven't damaged the crown. Having it recrowned will do nothing to prevent you from screwing the crown up in the future; so wait until you do screw it up (and you'll know you did because accuracy will degrade), then have it recrowned.

Yes, the lock up is now terrible and accuracy has degraded significantly. I believe the accuracy issue is due to poor lock up. I don't see any damage to the crown, but what if there are some tiny nicks that I did not notice?

If the nicks are so tiny you can't notice them they probably aren't touching the rifling. If you want to spend extra money have the barrel re-crowned or you could ask S&W to inspect the crown for damage.

I would suggest spending the extra money on a trigger job or something like that but I highly doubt a revolver that's already been fired 20,000 time would need a trigger job. lol
