This is one of the non firearm items I'm researching for a friend. The name on the blade is her grandfather. Beyond that, we don't know.

It's an antique Masonic sword.

Evidently her grandfather may have been a Mason. These swords are generally passed down through the family over the years.

Seems like a nice piece of family history I would tell her she needs to hang on to it, things such as this should remain in the family.

Here's some info on them.....

The Masons weren't the only fraternal order to have such items.

A lot of lodges had/have swords similar to that.

P.S. It's not for fighting. It strictly ceremonial.

Looks like a Knights Templar parade sword (http://arms2armor.com/Swords/masonicswords.htm). Definitely not for combat.

Thanks friends. I too believe she should keep this. I can't think the monetary value could be worth the sedimental value.

Masonic Sword could even be Knights of Columbus sword. I lean toward the latter in the absence of masonic symbols.

I even have a WMA aluminum ceramonial ax!
(Modern Woodmen of America)

I guess they were to cheap to buy swords!
Or weren't as likely to go on a crusade as the K of C!
