Mystery Machete

I recently moved, and found a machete in my garage.

It seems like it could be made to be fairly serviceable, but the blade is covered in bits of rust that I can't quite clean off, does anyone know a surefire way to shape this thing up?

Also, the only marking on it says "Made in Colombia", so i really don't have any clue as to the type of steel. Is there a way to tell what kind of steel it is constructed from?

Thanks.

If it isn't pitted just take a Scotchbrite pad and some oil to it.

If that doesn't do it use a wire brush and oil. Once you have the rust scrubbed off wrap sand paper around a file and draw it down the surface until you have smoothed it out. If you're willing to keep it oiled you can just do that.
