I've loaded around 300 55 gr PSP's but have about 300 roounds of the 55 gr Hornady V-Max and I'm struggling finding good OAL data. I'm using Benchmark powder. My PSPs shot flawlessly at an OAL of 2.213-2.217. The Hodgdon website shows all 55 gr min at 2.200 but didn't know if the v-max would have the same since the PSP's are .733 long and the V-max are .813 long. Any help would be appreciate.

Is this for .223?

OAL is not a "set in stone." You have to tune your load with OAL as you do with powder charge.

Magazine length may limit you. 2.25in works well in my PMags. I can use this length in several size bullets for .223.

I prefer to set the OAL and then adjust powder charge. Once I get a powder charge to most accurate, I may go back and adjust the OAL further.

SPECIAL NOTE ON CARTRIDGE OVERALL LENGTH “COL”
It is important to note that the SAAMI “COL” values are for the firearms and ammunition manufacturers industry and must
be seen as a guideline only.
The individual reloader is free to adjust this dimension to suit their particular firearm-component-weapon combination.
This parameter is determined by various dimensions such as 1) magazine length (space), 2) freebore-lead dimensions of
the barrel, 3) ogive or profile of the projectile and 4) position of cannelure or crimp groove.

My COL depends on my magazines. I shoot 223 only in my Mini-14. My mags like a short COL. So, bullet length doesn't matter so much...to me.

The Hornady 6th Edition shows a COL of 2.250" in .223 Remington for the 55gr V-Max (but what do they know)...

I have them at 2.240 and it fits in my mags just fine so for now I've loaded up about 50 rounds and will try them.

Thanks for all the info guys.
