The hunt went on...

After a week of only seeing Cows,Cows and more Cows, we decided to go back down river, pass by the house, check the kids, buy gas and some snacks, get coffee, eggs, and go furthe down, looking some more and again.
We hunted Geese , Ducks, catching a few and looked for Caribou....lotsa muskrats to shoot as well....

Well, we finally found a solitary Bull among so many females......we certainly know where bands of Bulls will be following, and the whole village is asking "Got Caribou?" .....yep, we have a good spot.

Caribou can be strange sometimes.~~LOL!!~~.....but were actually folding his antlers back and his forlegs will be wraped under them so I can work without 'em rolling on his side, while we skin and gut 'em....~~LOL!!~~

The wife took over when the meat hit the cardboard :D She set up an adhoc meat cutting station as the rains are back and its freeking warm

Cut into roasts , cubed and sliced , sinews dryed,and the rest getting hung and dryed as well, and yep, its smoking too....:D....so were getting ready for another round, though not any need for overnighting, the hunt is still on ........:D

Nice. But lemme ask you something - why did you shoot the bull? With a ratio of hunnert-n-sumpin to one, seems like the herd needs that bull, no? Or are you trying to reduce the population? Just wonderin.

Of course, the Mosin M-39 wins again:D

We shot the bull because he was FAT :D Its harvest time, and bulls are prime :D

The cows are kinda fat, but this guy had 3 inches of blubber on his butt.
When 1/2 of your diet is meat, you NEED fat to get through the winter. We cut off alot and use it with the skinny meats that we'll have this winter.
It snowed yesterday and today, so summer's truley ended.

If we wanted thinner, we would have not even left the village, as cows are passing through town now.
The rut will start in a week, and when that happens, the meat is bull unedible:barf: and we will get many cows then, anyway.

This is only time of year when we get FAT bulls. March Females are the next round of fat and we have to settle for 1/2 inch or so, then.
We can hunt Females most all year, 'cept mid april to June, when they calve.

He wasnt in rut, and belive me, part 3 will show THOUSANDS of Bulls who are trailing behind this herd headed South after a Summer on the North slope.

A Bull or two among the lead groups of cows that break the migration trail is not unusuall at all. These Cows are all older Cows and are leading the way :D

BTW what's the longest range you can reliably fire your mosin. It's a Finn isn't it?

I'd venture to say I can reliable do body shots out to 350 yards, and I do, across open tundra in the Winter, often.
200 and closer, I opt for head/neck shots, as I can reliably place them there, so I do.
It is much easier to sneak up on them in Summer.


Further shots are made according to circumstances, but only very rarely.
I get alot of practise in the field....

I can do my part , the Sako'd Mosin with Czeck 147gr does its part and I will stick with that combo no matter what :D
