Hey all,

I have always thought that a FIXED stock is the best option for me on a HD shotgun. I admit that I have never shot a shotgun equipped with a collapsible stock and pistol grip like those of the AR rifles. I didn't even care for the looks of those stocks.

I'd like to hear your thoughts on these stocks for your HD shotgun. Do you like them, hate them or do you love them? What do you think are the advantages and disadvantages to having this kind of stock on your Scattergun?

After fooling around with a new Mossy with one of these stocks for about 20 minutes I noticed my opinion of the stock started to shift a bit. I was starting to see the benefits that I would notice in having one and heck, it even started to look pretty good too. It seemed that with this type of stock you would be able to control the recoil better and get back onto the target much faster. Since I have never actually shot one, I am just speculating on that.

So what do you think of these collapsible AR style stocks on a HD shotgun?

I'm really interested in hearing your thoughts on this.

Some folks love them because they allow individualized fit. Some folks love them for the looks.

I have been unable to find one that let me get a good cheekweld on it. Since a shotgun seems to rely heavily upon a solid and repeatable cheekweld for proper pointing, my opinion has been that a collapsible stock will hurt my ability to effectively shoot the weapon.

There may be some adapters that allow a good cheekweld - I dunno (and hopefully others will chime in with details). The ones I tried certainly left me cold.

Have tried an adjustable stock, and I couldn't seem to get the right "fit" for me. A "No-Go" vote from me, but Your Mileage Will Vary.

Tried a couple of different designs over the years, including one of the recoil reducing designs. Didn't like any of 'em. YMMV of course.

Nope. After many years and many thousands of rounds, I haven't found anything that performs better for me than a standard stock configuration.

The M4 stock is a fairly sucky design all around. I get my beard stuck in the thing, and the cheek weld is mediocre. While the LOP is adjustable, it just never does quite fit right. And that's on a low-recoil rifle, where at least it doesn't hurt.

On a shotgun, a poor cheek weld, poor fit, and a poor stock design translate into poor pointing characteristics, and PAIN.

Why you'd want it on a shotgun, apart from "because it looks badass", is beyond me.:)

Not only do I prefer the standard style of stock, I prefer it to be made of wood and not plastic - then again, I also prefer my guns to be blued.......;)

I held a shotgun with one on it at a gun show and when I put it up to my shoulder, it felt rather uncomfortable and not what I would want on my HD shotgun. I prefer a traditional style stock for my cheek placement.

I have a Knoxx recoil-reducing stock, adjustable LOP, with the add on pack on an 870P, and I find after shooting trap and sporting clays all summer with my 870 Wingmaster, I'm not as thrilled with the pistol grip on the 870P as I once was. A year or so ago my answer would have been different, but I'm more accustomed to a regular stock with a good recoil pad on it now.

The other thing I don't like about it is that when I had a Surefire forend on the gun, it moves back a few inches and about breaks my left forefinger. I took it off for a bit, mounted a TLR-1 on it, and have moved back to the Surefire and am looking to replace the stock.

I have the Knoxx on my HD gun for LOP and recoil reasons for my wife. Our LOP's are drastically different (she's all the way in, I'm all the way out). The recoil reduction helps as well since she is pretty small.

If it were just me? I'd just use a limbsaver on the standard stock and call it a day.

I have a Mesa and like the ergonomics. I hate the looks of the M4 stock but that is the only thing that fits, other than maybe the new ACE. Someday when I have nothing else to do I plan on making a walnut stock in a standard length that will replace the M4 stock.

I put a Mesa leo on my 870 with a hogue forearm and rifle sight barrel.Fit is perfect but have not even fired it.Looks great but just not my thing.I'm going to take stock off and put some police walnuts on.Guess that will leave me with more "stuff" just laying around.You might want to shoot one first to even see if you want one.I think I paid $160.00 for that Mesa stock and now wished I hadn't.

I think I've said this before and it will remain my OPINION unless you prove otherwise.

-A collapsible stock on ANY firearm which is only handled by a single individual is useless.
-A collapsible stock has 2 advantages; the first is that it allows multiple users of the same gun to get a proper fit, the second is that if the stock is a folder or has considerable travel, it allows someone to store the firearm in smaller areas than it would normally fit.
-A collapsible stock does not IMO provide any tactical advantage for an average home defense weapon.

There is one exception to this. If your job is clearing buildings it has been stated to me that a carbine with a collapsed stock maneuvers better in close, and unfamiliar quarters whereas if you find yourself in a longer range engagement you would extend the stock to your proper LOP so you may better mount and aim the weapon. This was not formulated by me but stated by a local sheriff deputy.

I tried folding stocks and didn't care for the way they feel (cold metal to cheeks don't feel good). I don't like the AR type stocks as they don't give me a good cheek weld. I'll stick with the SpeedFeed with four extra cartridges.

The ONLY pistol grip stock that I ever liked was the Remington factory folder. It's not as uncomfortable to shoot as it looks.

That said, a standard stock is best on a shotgun unless you need to store it in a small area.

The only advantage I have found for the things is when you wear level IIIa body armor you can adjust your lop.

I have put a Knoxx Spec Ops on my wife's 12 gauge 870 - they really do decrease recoil!

The adjustable length of pull is also a plus because she is short-statured.

For myself, I like regular stocks, not pistol-grip stocks; the Knoxx would give me cheek-slap when I shot it.

I have a Speedfeed II on one of my 870's that I like a lot - it has a very solid feel to it that the factory-original synthetic stock lacked (being that the factory synthetic stock is hollow plastic).

Wood is good, too!

If you like pain then get one of these. Bad cheekweld, no surface area on your shoulder, recoil only hits where the bar is located, they flex too much but not enough to dampen any recoil.

Tried one about 20 years ago,after about 20 rounds switched right back.Just didn't fit.and the recoil was noticably worse.

If you're not mounting the gun or shooting from the hip or some other Hollywood buisness it might be what your looking for?
