I saw a nice specimen complete with a Series 70 lower. Did these things work as designed?

Yes. They provide some of the "feel" of a .45 pistol with the low cost of shooting .22 LR. They can be temperamental, but most of the problems stem from the ammunition. The dirtier and more greasy it is, the less satisfactory the performance of the conversion kit will be.
Plus, buying the conversion kit on the frame, you have the option to buy a .45 slide and have two calibers on one frame.
But accuracy is not a strong point of conversions. Accuracy is, IMHO, only fair and simply cannot come up to the standards of a purpose built .22 target pistol like the S&W M41 or the Ruger target Mk II's, let alone some of the exotic European guns.

So far that is what I have gathered. That fouling tends to uhh... foul up the workings. You're right Jim, it is a 2 in 1 gun. What is really getting my trigger finger all hot and bothered is the fact that it is sitting on a Series 70 lower and I am in a place where the lawmakers have a say on what makes me happy.
