Hey everyone...

I'm starting to look at different bolt guns, possibly looking into a .308 caliber bolt gun. I've researched around, the Remington 700's, Savage's, Winchester Model 70's, Browning A-Bolts, Weatherby's etc...

Mainly used for target shooting and deer hunting.

Then I gotta find a good scope to go along w/ the rifle, most likely a Leupold. Not sure what specs yet, still learning how to read the specs. I know 3-9x means the magnification, the rest I'm not sure really how to read.

I've read most of the bolt gun threads all over Sigforum, THR, here on Calguns, 1911forum and wherever else.

So, I'd like your advice on what rifles are available out there besides the brands I've listed for Bolt rifles, and also teach me how to read the scope specs. Teach me about scopes!

Also, lense shades for the scopes,I've seen numerous pictures where people have installed these on their scopes. How does it affect the scopes functionality?

Also, most importantly, Dont forget to post pics of your bolt gun. Please also list the rifle and Scope specs, including what you have done to your rifle.

Thanks all, this should be a fun thread.

Here's what it started out as, 300WinMag PSS that I bought used for 600 shipped to Ca.

It wears a Bushnell Elite 3200 mil-dot scope as of now, it was a simple little scope that I bought simply to do beginning load development for the rifle while also getting some hands on experience with the mil-dot reticle.

http://home.bak.rr.com/varmintcong/Rem700/300WinBlack.jpg

Shortly after I got it, I did what I do to most of my black rifles, I painted that sucker and added a soft comfy cheek piece.
http://home.bak.rr.com/varmintcong/Rem700/300wincamor.jpg

Since it's a 300WinMag, it isn't gonna be too terribly long before I can justify having it rebuilt. Oh and what plans I have for it :)

Looking at a McMillian A2 stock. Going to go with Badger Ordinance 20MOA maximized base with Badger Ordinance rings. The scope is likely to be a Nightforce 5.5-22x with mil-dot reticle. All work will probably be done by GA Precision.

Currently the rifle makes it relatively easy and fun to play out to 500 yards, still not quite honed in on a good handload but I'm doing decently with the few loads I have tried. Maybe another 6 months and I'll be ready to say bye bye to the barrel and go for a full rebuild(doing just over 150 rounds a month as now).

When it's all said and done I'm looking for a 1k-1200 yard rifle, there is a 1k yard range within relatively easy driving distance and I'm looking to go play around there a bit.

Talk to El_Rojo... he's shot at it a few times from what I can gather.

It's off "over them thar hills", I've been over to it once before while the club was having a match there. I met up with a couple of the shooters who maintain the place but it seems like they desire to keep it a little known fact that there's a 1k yard range close by. Limited membership from what it sounds like. Bout an hour's drive west of Bakersfield.

I'm beginning to think I don't really need a 1k yard range, I'd rather get good at estimating range and being able to shoot under all types of field conditions. A 1k yard known distance range though would just be nice to get out to on occasion and pit my skills against others, more or less as a reality check.

Well lets see

I'm starting to look at different bolt guns, possibly looking into a .308 caliber bolt gun. I've researched around, the Remington 700's, Savage's, Winchester Model 70's, Browning A-Bolts, Weatherby's etc...
All good brands can't go wrong with any of those!

Mainly used for target shooting and deer hunting
I'm a big "Get the right tool for the job" kinda guy, but as long as you are willing to hump that stick while hunting one could be the same for both jobs

Then I gotta find a good scope to go along w/ the rifle, most likely a Leupold. Not sure what specs yet, still learning how to read the specs. I know 3-9x means the magnification, the rest I'm not sure really how to read.
Got the first part right about the ??X?? label. The second is the diameter of the forward lens. So it would read MagnificationXForwardLens diameter.

I've read most of the bolt gun threads all over Sigforum, THR, here on Calguns, 1911forum and wherever else.
This is good!!

So, I'd like your advice on what rifles are available out there besides the brands I've listed for Bolt rifles, and also teach me how to read the scope specs. Teach me about scopes!

Ok, Bolt guns
You got:

Mil surplus, K-31s, M38s, K98s, 91/30s... can be had for $200 or less and can mount scopes of some sort on most

Commerical bolts other than listed, lets see: Armalite, CZ, FN, Howa, Charles Daily, Ruger, Steyr, and Tikka, off the top of my head, Prices all over the place

Custom bolts: Ultralite, McMillan, IBA, GA Precision, Armament Technology, ASI, and NorCal Precision just to name a very small few, 1K + range

Scopes: You get what you pay for! The Super Sniper series from SWFA is the best deal I've seen.

Also, lense shades for the scopes,I've seen numerous pictures where people have installed these on their scopes. How does it affect the scopes functionality?

Cuts down on angled glare for a crisp sight picture

Also, most importantly, Dont forget to post pics of your bolt gun. Please also list the rifle and Scope specs, including what you have done to your rifle.

Alright, as soon as I find my digicam I'll give you a pic of my tuned and trued Remington 700P DM .308 win with a 16X42 Super Sniper with Luepold Mark 4 base, PWR high rings, and Harris Bipod

The top one is a Savage 12FV in .223 with a Leupold VXII 6-18x40mm on top. The bipod is Harris and Podloc. I cut and layered foam underneath the Eagle Industries stock pack to bring the cheek weld to where I like it.

The lower rifle is a Remington LTR in .308 with a Leupold VXIII 3.5-10x40mm M3 Long Range scope. Another Harris and Podloc bipod with an Eagle Industries sling.

Honestly, I don't shoot it that often because I haven't taken it out past 100yards. Been shooting my M1A. Blaser puts it into little tiny clovers at 100yards. That straight pull is pretty smooth and fast. I like it a lot. Accessories are a pain and hella expensive. I scored a deal on it from a guy who barely used it and needed to unload it. Would I buy it straight retail? I would if I had money to spare.

1974-ish Remington 700 C model in .243, sort of intermediate between the standard production and the real customs - had to order and wait 16 weeks; hand-lapped barrel. Leopold scope. Mods = shot it, shot it some more.

http://www.fototime.com/D0BC029846F6B5B/standard.jpg

1921 Swedish Mauser, bought for $75.00 in 1990 or 91. Mods = shot it, shot it some more - very accurate, but witha 29" barrel too long for the woods.

http://www.fototime.com/EC431202B0B1327/standard.jpg

1948 Swiss K31, 7.5 swiss; only had it for a couple of months, no picture. For 120.00, I think these are a screamin' deal. Accurate and fun.

My "most favorite" bolt actions are .22's, though.

Bullet Bob, the picture is pretty, but that's a precarious position to have your firearms in! Put it on a table instead.

Anyway, it's hard to go wrong with any of the brands you've mentioned. I'd get the Remington 700 PSS myself.

Don't forget to look at the CZ rifles. Great value. Set trigger for target shooting and standard trigger for hunting (or set trigger too if you have a nice stable shooting position). If you're going to drag it around the woods I'd recommend the Lux or the American over my big heavy Varmit Laminated (9.3 lbs w/o scope or ammo per the website). It's in .308 and it shoots a lot better than I do :)

Okie, how hard was it to mount a scope to that 48a? I have a Yugo 24/47 that would really like that.

Okiecruffler
November 2, 2003, 09:44 PM
It probably took about an hour to get the mount lined up just how I wanted it. You have to eyeball it until you think you have it right, then tighten down the set screws, then mount the scope, boresight it and see just how far off you actually are. Took me about 4 tries IIRC. I'm sure there's probably and easier way. Not for those with no patience, but I would get another if I needed a scoped rifle.

Finding a well sporterized warhorse is something you might enjoy.

1903 (http://www.olegvolk.net/gallery/thanksgiving03/jollyfellas), was wearing a 2.5-6x, but will be wearing a 4x Kahles. Used several different weapons this past year, but this one took 2 deer at 173 and 128 yards, within minutes of each other. (Would've been within seconds, but I was waiting to see if deer 2 would give me a better shot.)

This is my Tikka built up by Mac Tilton at Mtguns.
Fully adjustable stock and cheekpiece, 1-8 twist 223 cal barrel by Trueflite. PNW rear, gehmann adjustable front, and gehmann adjustable iris rear.
Trigger adjusted to 2 pounds, very crisp, with no creep or overtravel.

It's fun to shoot.

Here are a couple of mine:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v217/Red_Sc/Guns/3guns.jpg

On top is a stock Remington PSS in .308 I painted with Krylon. It's currently wearing a Weaver 15x scope, but I'm not sure what it's going to end up with.

Middle is a pre64 Win. Model 70 in .300 Win Mag. It has a 16X Super Sniper on it. It's a very good scope, but not ideal for most of the hunting I do. Works well hunting fields, though. It has a Shaw barrel and unknown muzzle brake. The muzzle brake is nice! I'm not sure of the origin of the walnut. It may be the original, worked over, or it may be custom.

Bottom is a Weatherby Vanguard in .270 Win. It has a 4.5-14X40 Simmons scope. For a cheap scope, I love it. This is a great deer gun.

I also have 2 Enfield Mk1No4's, but I don't have pictures of them. I'll have to post some later.
