Anyone know of a good smith to make my Norinco into a basic USGI clone?
I'm looking for a package deal like Springfield offers for their 1911s. Maybe a starting price to start saving up? thanks

Look no further than Warbird (http://www.warbirdscustomguns.com/M14-M1A.htm) or Smith Enterprise, Inc. (http://www.smithenterprise.com/index.html)

SEI has reworked two Norinco and two Poly Tech M14s for me.

Hey H20 man, are the Norincos as good as the Polytechs?
What about a good price point to aim at?

Agree with H2O - and I think Warbird is close to you.

The Norinco M14s may not be as pretty as the Poly Tech, but they are both structurally sound and great receivers to build on.

Both Warbird and SEI can perform a USGI bolt conversion without replacing the excellent chrome lined Chinese barrel.
The Chinese trigger group, op rod, receiver, barrel and gas system are all good.

Add a USGI lugged flash hider, a USGI wood or synthetic stock, USGI or SEI sights and you are well on your way to completing your basic USGI M14 clone. You may also want to install a USGI or SEI op rod spring, the ChiCom spring is a little short - but it works.

Winston, from their telephone area code, it's east Texas.

Now my question is where can I get one of those hooded front sights for a dovetail mount??

What would the cost be?

BudW What would the cost be?

I believe this is what Warbird charges:

Labor to convert to USGI bolt $125.
Refinish barreled receiver $75.

You supply the ChiCom rifle and the USGI bolt with small bolt parts.

Note in the above price list, you must provide the USGI parts. His prices are very reasonable for shop service, but the prices of USGI parts (in general, not just from him) are getting higher and higher.
