I have a 38 S&W Special, given to my wife by her father. Serial #62162, 2 in barrel, swing out cyl. 6 shot with the checkered wood grips, I would say in 95% range. Can you tell me the year or possibly the value?
Thanks

Nothing adding up here to I.D. it.
Any chance you left off a letter serial number prefix?
Is that the actual serial number off the butt of the gun?
Or a number you got inside the frame with the cylinder open?
The serial number you posted, along with the info you gave, makes it an early .38 M&P, Model of 1902, made in 1904.
But they never came with a 2" barrel.
If you could post a picture it would certainly help.

RC,
I got that number from the inside of the frame, I will look at the butt tonight. Also I will try to get some pics up.
It is a 2 inch barrell though.
thanks for your help.

O.K>
The number inside the frame on older guns was just an assembly number.
It is meaningless.
Newer guns will have the serial number & model number inside the frame, and also the serial number on the butt.
Even newer guns will have the serial number laser etched on the outside of the frame.

I looked on the butt and lo and behold there is a prefix number, C8093xx. I will try to get some pics up later.
Thanks for helping.

O.K.
That would be a gun made 1963-1965.
If it's a steel frame it is a Model 10-6 M&P.
If it's an alloy frame it is a Model 12-2 M&P Airweight.
Look inside the crane cut and see which model it is.

rcmodel,
Are you sure?
Wasn't the "C" prefix the late 1940s-mid-latter-1950s run of the last true "M&P", prior to the advent of the Model 10?

I looked inside the crane and it says mod 10-5
Thanks guys for helping me on this.
