Shot with 20gr. xpt winchester ammo, Marlin 917s at about 100yds. Poor shot placement required second shot to head. I was surprised that neither shot exited the beast (even the head shot.) Has any one used this caliber on coyotes? It was a big one for Florida 34.6lbs.

We have had very mixed results on coyotes here with any .17 caliber, even the big centerfires.
Sometimes they kill like lightening, and sometimes they don't kill at all.
In any case, you won't see 20 grain bullets shooting in one side and out the other.

I have seen new hunters ruined by 17hmrs. I had a buddy that thought a 17 would be good to start his son out with so that he wouldn't be afraid of the recoil. The first coyote that he shot with it was his last one he will shoot for a while. Though the placement was good that coyote yelped and spun circles trying to bite at the wound. He felt so bad for it he cried. After that I think the only thing I would use a 17hmr for is very small varmints.

how much wood could a wood chuck chuck if a wood chuck could chuck a17hmr. any thing larger = bigger gun. Now if i was out messing around with a rim fire & happened onto a yote. its going to get shot just the same. But when i set out with hand calls for the dogs its a 5.56 or bigger. I would love a 22-250! In Nebraska's hot humid summer days. you can watch that 22-250 split the air & leave a vapor trail. its fricken cool. I do see teens every year out hunting dogs with the rim fires.

Can anyone tell me what are good kinds of calls for coyotes? And the best way to use them.

I use Primos calls http://www.cabelas.com/cabelas/en/templates/product/standard-item.jsp;jsessionid=3G4NTCYW1SMBLLAQBBJSCO3MCAEFIIWE?_DARGS=/cabelas/en/common/catalog/item-link.jsp_A&_DAV=MainCatcat20712-cat602047&id=0013582227091a&navCount=3&podId=0013582&parentId=cat602047&masterpathid=&navAction=push&catalogCode=IK&rid=&parentType=index&indexId=cat602047&hasJS=true and have had good luck, but get busted a lot as they circle around in the 3' tall sage brush before I can see them. There are some good electronic calls out there available too if its legal in your state. FoxPro is really nice but expensive. I am thinking of trying the e-call from Hunters specialties.
I dont think I would use a .17 HMR on Yotes, I prefer .223 or larger although .22 mag can do ok at closer ranges. So mayby on a small one like yours at 35 lbs at close range it would do ok if hit well.

i keep my shots to 75 yards or less and have had no problems (head shots only) that leaves a nice clean pelt.

Shot a crow with a 17 clean pass through at 40 yards , made innards outards flew away never seen him again. Thus ended my affection with the 17. Video on you tube shows deflection off a groundhog head. Field mice maybe?

I think I will do head shot first next time, if that is the gun I have in my hand. (correction 20gr. Hornady xpt)
I guess from what I am reading; this caliber will not pass through 6 inches of meat. But I still like the caliber though for its accuracy, fun to shoot etc.
