View Full Version : Ever have one of THOSE days?

I went shooting last night for a bit.

I'm just getting over a nasty case of pink eye and was still having trouble seeing, but man, I couldn't shoot worth :cuss: last night!

I was all over the paper, even with my High Power, with which I'm the most accurate!

I couldn't even buy a center hit with my P7 PSP...

I shot my .41 off the rest at 30 feet, which is about bowling pin range.

The first group, OFF THE REST!, was almost large enough to get a bowling ball through!

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHH!

What a waste of ammo... :fire: :fire: :fire:

I feel your pain. I hate it when I start out all over the paper then try to compensate or change my grip and get even worse.

Strange how that happens. I've noticed it with other sports as well. You just can't get into a groove: can't make a basket, put a ball in the side pocket, find the sweet spot on the tennis raquet or cut a good green light at the track.

I do like it when the opposite happens and everything feels natural and effortless. Wish it happened more often!

Many days like that. Now that I'm shooting bullseye on a regular basis again, I'm starting to commence to begin to rely on form again: this stance, that place for my left hand, this way of gripping the gun, that way of half-closing my left eye, et cetera.

That saidâ„¢, even after I recapture my old form and work up the age-necessitated modifications, I'm sure I'll have nights when I can barely hit the broad side of a barn. That's why I'm still shooting after all these years: it's extremely difficult to shoot well consistently.

Hi Mike ..... To quote re1973 ''Sigh...yes sir'' ......... agreed!!

I doubt there are many who have not suffered this. It's the apparent waste of ammo that hurts so much!

Anyways .. how come the pink-eye then?! Peekin thru too many drafty keyholes eh!:p

Just kiddin.!:D

The other day I was out and ended up wondering if my eyesight had radically changed.

Maybe it's the sunspots. :)

As for good and bad days, I think we have all had our share.
I figure that's why we need hobbies like shooting, etc.
And drinkin'.
Yeah, the cause and solution to all of life's little problems.

Golf is excellent mental training for shooting. The ability to compartmentalize each and every swing of the club is key to keeping the score down.

Golf is a game played in the head, just like shooting.

Days like that is why I started drinking! ;)

Seriously, when I recognize a range session when I can re-use paper targets for the next time out, I just pack up & hang out w/ the fellas at the counter :uhoh: :banghead: :D

OK, Zach S, you made me laugh! :D

P95, unfortunately, I'm very prone to eye infections of all types. It's a rare year that I don't get at least 3 or 4.

Michael Jordan said when he was "in the zone" the basket looked like a wash tub and the ball felt like a marble. He said he knew anything he thru at the basket was going in. Ted Williams said that when he was hitting well, he could see the stitches on the baseball as it was coming at him.
Unfortunately, the reverse is also true. Just keep working at your shooting and you'll work you way thru your slump. Shoot well and often.

I might have had a worse day yesterday.

After work, I headed to the range yesterday to see if my injured shoulder was healed enough (the doctor said so) to allow me to put in some realistic practice. I had practiced quite a few draws at home, but I had not drawn a loaded autoloading pistol from leather for almost three months. I had my Colt Series 80 Government Model in my Sparks Summer Special, a combo I have used for more than a few years. Before I even got to the range, I was nearly rear-ended by a very old and very big truck, so I was properly "pre-stressed". In retrospect, I should have known this was not going to be my day.

Anyway I get to the range, get set-up, and perform a strong-side draw from concealment. And from there it went really bad. As the pistol cleared the leather and started coming up on target, my shoulder twinged. Well, it more than twinged. I had a "bolt" of pain that ran from my shoulder to my fingers that paralyzed me for a moment. My arm literally froze in place, and the pistol tumbled from my fingers. My pistol fell to the floor, landing on the dustcover. I was utterly terrified and mortified.

Thank God for the Series 80 firing pin safety. There was no ND, and the pistol was not damaged (as verified by a detail strip later). Only my pride and confidence were shattered. Needless to say that was the end of my range session.

It appears I need some more healing time before I try this again.

Some days are just like that, where you couldn't hit the floor with your hat. Dust it off. A better day is coming.

i just call those days 'break-in days'. you know, not really shooting for accuracy, but just making sure it will go 'bang'. any sympathetic shooter on the range will understand that.

Yes I've had days like that. But what do you do when they string out into weeks, months, years?

When do say..........OK, enough is enough, I'm changing things. Then, how do you change them?

Had one of those days today. Couldn't hit the broadside of Roise O'Donnel's bum, and that's a mighty big target.

The post was only to be funny, I was indeed out of pocket for about 5 days.

Next time you get an eye infection, let me know. There's more than one way to skin a cat. ;)
