I'm replacing the fore-arm grip on my 870 (or trying to, at this point). I removed the fore-arm assembly from the gun, but how do I get the grip off? There's a ring at the front end that looks like it should unscrew to let the grip come off, but I can't get the thing to budge. Is there a special tool required?

There are special tools, but if you've removed the forend assembly from the receiver, there are a couple of things you can do...one is use a flat metal plate about 1" wide that will "bridge" the tunnel and engage the two slots on the forend nut. Turn counterclockwise to remove as usual. The other is to use a set of needlenose pliers, wrap the tips in electrical or masking tape to prevent gouging, and fit each tip in a corresponding slot on the forend nut. Happy cranking...

I used a small nail. I cut it with a dremel to size. Grabbed it with vice grips and put it in the slot. Just unscrew from there.
