I'm thinking of buying a Lone Wolf Paul Defender. Does anyone have experience with this knife? Or more appropriately the Paul lock . I've read some reviews that say they develop wobble, But I've also read others that say they are very strong. Anyway, any opinions on the knife,or The lock. Thanks

No first hand experience here. All I can tell you is that many moons ago (early 1980's) a classmate owned one of the Gerber-made Paul knives. Based on his experience, the Paul locking mechanism does not abide gritty/dusty contamination well. Whether this meant just interfering with lock-up or actually damaging the lock, I disremember. He'd carried it with him on a college field trip to Presque Isle nature preserve and somehow got sandy water in it. I remember him being really upset that he'd apparently shizzed up a pretty expensive knife. It was making unhappy noises when he tried to open it and the lock buttons were sticking. He planned on rinsing it out when we got back to campus. Can't remember whether it made a full recovery or not.

I have had a Gerber Paul knife ever since they came out with it way back when with no problems. I will qualify that by saying it wouldn't be my first choice for an "outdoors" knife as there are certainly better choices for that purpose. when Gerber first brought it out I think it was intended for a "gentleman's" knife. I carry it because it doesn't scare a lot of people when you need to use a knife for minor jobs

I've had a Gerber Paul as well and never had any problem, but then it was rarely carried and never used. It was "played" with enough to wear a lesser mechanism out and held up well.

I have the Paul Presto.

I've "played" with the release enough to satisfy myself that it's not going to wear out in anything like normal use.

I have found that occasionally the button will require a little more "umph" if it's been riding in my pocket for a while, but after it opens once, the "sticky" button condition is gone.

I have not called them to see if any kind of lube is required. It's been a year and a half and, other than that slight "sticking" on the first open after several days in pocket, no problems. Lock-up is solid and tight.

Edge is sharp and clean. Has not needed sharpening.

I have a few different versions of the Paul knife and all are tight, easy to open and close, retain an edge and easily re-applied...

I like them a lot but for a "Gentleman's" knife not a bash around the bush knife...

Are there better knives out there, according to other people yes, but as a collector of all edged weapons, they fall into the category of "I collect them" so will still buy them from just about any maker...Orvis (http://www.orvis.com/store/product.aspx?pf_id=60P6&dir_id=1089&group_id=1127&cat_id=5045&subcat_id=6569) has a lovely one with snakeskin style scales that I'm considering...
