I finally got my SP101, now I need a holster/s?

September 28, 2009, 01:25 AM
I finally picked up a Ruger SP101, been looking for 1 for awhile! :D
Now it's time to find out what works in a holster for this little gem. The gun came with an IWB holster, not sure I'm too fond of it. I'm probably going to look for a belt slide and s.o.b. holsters.
I don't carry all of the time, but keep 1 in the truck, and depending on the circumstances and location, like to be able to put it on fairly easily.
Any thoughts on carriers for a speed loader, or just a pocket? They're kind of bulky for that, but it's an option.
Any suggestions? What works well for you guys?

Check out simplyrugged.com. He has 1 with snap on belt loops and makes a leather pouch for the bianchi speed loader. I have 2. ! has cartridge loops on the outside of the holster, pretty nice and just that, simply rugged.

Galco makes a great holster for the SP101 and the Alaskan and you can order it through Ruger with the Ruger logo on it.

What about the 3" SP101?
I have a used one on the way, and holsters seem fewer than for the the 2.5".
One I found was the Grandfather Oak kydex IWB. Thoughts?

I carry a Ruger Security Six, 4" bbl in one of the Simply Rugged pancake holsters with the addon IWB straps, so I can go with IWB, OWB, or crossdraw, however I'm feeling that day. Great value for a holster, and the guy that makes them is great to deal with.

Bianchi's accumold holsters now come in paddle format and is made for the 2inch sp101. I've got an older belt model that I like a lot, very rugged construction and positive snug fit/retention.

Thanks for all the input - I'm gonna have to check them all out. Simply Rugged is definitely on the 'A list! I've heard alot of good things about them. And I've got an Accumold for my .45s that I like pretty well. Not much for concealment, but a great OC rig. I'l have to look at them as well.

I didn't know that Ruger was selling the accessories like holsters. Have to check them out too, as I need 1 for my GP100 as well.

A week or 2 ago there was a thread on here with another small, family owned holster company, run by 2 older folks and their daughter. I thought I saved the link, but can't find it... gettin' senile I guess! Anybody have a clue who it was?

I just got 2 Simply Rugged holsters yesterday for a 3-1/16" SP101. They are well made, well priced, and only took 13 days from order to receipt.

Just got my SimplyRugged. I've been carrying in a Galco for almost a year and Rob's work is soo much better. I think I finally found a holster built as tough as the gun!

Most of my holsters have been open bottom in design. Can anyone w/ a simply rugged holster comment on if this feature is missed on their holsters?

I just received my Simple Rugged holster for my Detective Special knock off. I ordered last Saturday and it came today (Saturday). Hows that for turn around time.

This is arguably one of the best holsters I've ever seen, touched, played with, or used. Hands down.

Oh, they are open bottom also.

Lots of Simply Rugged fans here! I ordered mine for a 3" 101 yesterday. I've been using Comp-Tac's Kydex IWB. Tkes some positioning, but worked out fine in the end.

Oh yeah, try your 101 with speedloaders before you sink $$ on pouches. I found they are not much speedier than strips because the grips interfere. Thinking of filing on my Badgers and refinishing.
