New Beretta carbine

Went to the range this evening with Blacksnowman, and once we were done shooting, we did the obligitory gun browsing. Guy behind the counter says (parphrasing here) "Check it!" and holds up a Beretta Storm! He says it's the only one in the KC area, possibly the only one in Missouri and Kansas. He practically tosses it to me to fondle.

Overall, I was impressed with it. It looks good, not nearly as toy like as I was expecting. Shoulders good, points well. Sights were a bit funky. Normal peep and post, but the peep hole seemed tiny, it was kinda hard to see the front sight. Only thing I would change would be to let the pistol grip be a pistol grip...eliminate that connecting section to the stock. And open up the rear sight more too.

Dealer said the .40 cal version won't be out till next year. I think it would be a great sister gun to my Beretta 96fs, since they use the same mags and all. Excellent home defense combo, me thinks.

I agree, Nightcrawler is very intelligent! And talented. And good-looking. He's also witty, charming, smooth, suave, and cool.

I concur. I'd just like to add, however, that Nightcrawler is also VERY humble. He's like, WAY more humble than most people.

so... about that Storm. ;)

thanks for the review! I was wondering about the pistol grip thing.. from the "Rifleman" article a while back it looked like it was pretty well designed for a thumbhole-type arrangement, compared to a lot of the other "get around the law" designs out there.. did it cramp your wrist at all?

I was extremely impressed by the ergos of the one I played with at SHOT; it seemed very well thought-out.

It ain't for me, just because I don't have much in the way of Beretta handguns. If I owned a 92, 96 or Cougar that I used a lot and had a bunch of magazines for, I'd be all over the CX4.

As I mentioned in another thread, I just picked up one for my kids to plink with yesterday. The rear sight has two apertures that you can flip to select: a very small one (long range?), and a much larger one that is more on the line of a ghost ring.

Kaylee asked:

No, it was very comfortable. I just think it would look better without the bar in the way...

Ah...didn't look at it that closely. I was thinking this morning as I woke up (How's that for being a gun-nut!) that it probably has a dual site setup...thanks for confirming that!

And Finally, S_O_Laban asked:
what range were you and the snowman at?

Bullet Hole Range in Overland Park, Kansas.

the flash picture on Gunbroker (http://www.galibois.com/marshfield/BTASTORM.jpg) makes the finish appear to be semi smooth

is it slick or sticky?

Handled one last night. Very Star-Trek, light wieght and 'neat". front sight was hard to pick up.. agree the rear apeture is too small.

Not terribly pricey. Six-fifty or so (if I recall).

I was of the opinion that were unobtainium. I MUST have one. Right away! And I'm not usually an 'early adopter' sort, neither. I'll likely buy the first one I see for sale.

I received a reply from Beretta today (re: the CX4 .45). Here it is:

Dear Customer,

Currently the 45 caliber is forecasted for some time during 2004 -- Unfortunately we are unable to give you, at this time, a more definitive time frame.

We appreciate your continued interest in the Beretta product line -- You may wish to contact us towards the beginning of 2004 for additional updates -- If we can be of any further assistance please do not hesitate to contact us.

Best Regards,
Beretta USA

Dr Rob,

I just bought one for $576.00 (and I'm sure the dealer was selling it at a profit).

I recall another poster saying they saw one for around $650.00; maybe thats the full MSRP?

A lot of dealers out there are real hogs on prices.

When I first grabbed it, I thought it was some kind of rubber coating, kinda like the Hougue OverMolded stocks. But it is just hard plastic...maybe cause it was new it felt ... grippy.

Got to handle one of these yesterday, and it's very cool. Lightweight, points really well, and has some great features. The retractible accessory rail was a real surprise.

Anyone have experience with one of these?

But don't forget that they come with spacers to increase LOP, and more spacers can be purchased. I forget the max LOP, but I THINK it was somewhere in the 14" -ish range.

Thanks for the report!

FYI

There is a thread on this in rifles!

Several people have handled them

are they black or that grayish blueish color?

Black Snowman

They're black, might lean tward blue-black (as opposed to a brown-black) under very intense light. It's feature rich for a carbine and WAY cheaper than a UMC (once supply meets demand of course). I've handled the UMC as well and between the two it's a toss-up as to which I like better. If I were spending money, the Storm wins hands down due to the price differance.

The storm (in 9mm at least) has high-caps available for it without an expensive conversion (and starting price is about half as well). It's shorter OAL since the magazine is in the grip and not in front of the trigger. Ergos are good but charging isn't nearly as handy or quick on the CX4. Reversable ejection is a big plus for the lefty shooters out there.

Interesting gun but I took my carbine in the .223 flavor :) It was neat to see one in person, I would have loved to disassemble it and gaze at the inards but I didn't want to push my luck ;)

I expect wholesale price on the CX4 is somewhere around $515...got mine for $576 from a dealer who usually charges about 10% over cost plus shipping.

Needless to say, his shop probably sells the most guns of anyone in this State.

I just got back from the bullet hole and I too was caught by this carbine. It feels right.... $650 is alot of money though. I really like it's ability to take 92fs mags. Front sight was alittle off though.

Kamicosmos, when do you and black snowman usually shoot at TBH? (be funny if I've met either of you without knowing)

There were no less than 2 of them at the Nashville gun show this past weekend. On Saturday the prices were $650 & $649.99. On Sunday, the first dealer dropped his price to $625. His shop is right down the street from my apartment and IIRC, he's had it sitting there for two or three weeks.

They definitly look like something out of Star Wars. From what I saw, they seem pretty decent though. Maybe someday.
