I'm searching for info on the meaning of CP71 stamped to the left side of a 35xxxx Savage 99 in 303 cal. mid 30's production.
The figures are about 3/8" high and stacked
CP
71
on the forearm and stock behind the pistol grip.
Gun was bought in Colorado but have no idea of its past history.

I'd think 1935-38. Could be a Canadian martial-marked rifle or a police rifle. I'd drop the owner of the above website an e-mail.
