the '61 Navy was the last Colt put out in old Sam's lifetime, and is considered by some to be the very best of breed, being the most advanced percussion Colt, with it's beautiful gracefull lines, and the geared loading lever [as on the 1860 Army] rather than the simple ''hinge'' of the '51 Navy.

Or are you just Gloating about your new prize , hee hee hee :D
Another Histerrical fact is it was the last Colt Cap and Ball ever given a Military Contract , ummm , yup . :D .........
I used to think the 1851 was the cats meow , meeeeeoooowwww , untill I handled an 1861 that tis . :D ........Although when I am feelin RedNeck and my Southern Charm breaks out , only a 51 will do :D ...
The 1861 not only looks better than almost ANY woman , it is as gracefull too than most . Word ! :D ...And it has SIX NIPPLES , count um , there you go man :D
These aint New York Colts , I like to call them my Medditeranian 61's instead , hee hee hee :D ...But man Noble , hard to argue my poinient factoids on this compairison of why I walk the Earth , Guns and Girls man , oh yeh ! ! ! ! The 61 is, imho, the sexiest revolver ever made. The curves are magic.
http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d37/madcratebuilder/61navy01.jpg
On the other hand the 51 "feels" different, 2oz lighter than the 61 but the same grip, frame and cylinder. Strange how changing from a hinged to a creeping loading lever can change the feel of a revolver.

I have three C series 51 Colts but my favorite shooter is the 1964 Uberti 51 from Navy Arms. I think it's the nicest Italian revolver I have ever shot.

Dont get me wrong I love to look at other peoples toys but it makes me jelous as all get out. The Jaeger and Madcrate have both shared there wisdom freely and believe me it is very apreciated. I have learned so much from both of them. Now I want Jaeger to teach me how to make grips the way he does.

My last revolver acquisition is the Uberti/Cimarron '61. I'd been looking around for the
civilian model (doesn't have the shoulder stock cutouts and screws) and following
the always excellent advice I get on this forum (thanks guys!) I contacted Buffalo Arms
and had just the best phone transaction. These people seem actually glad to hear from you. Turns out there are two civilian models which are the identical gun but with different finishes. I ordered the less expensive one @$275 which has the charcoal finish. You can actually insert and remove the wedge with thumb pressure. No hammer needed. (I wonder if this is the way they're supposed to be?)
To the range last weekend and put 100+ balls through it. No sign of peening or the drag mark from the bolt on the cylinder. No cap jams. Amazing. Crazy accurate but that may be due to the front sight being a blade type and I'm getting used to it.
The guy I talked to said that their supervisor checks out each gun before shipping and also loosens the nipples. He also said that they check out the guns before they purchase them from the distributor and reject the questionable ones. I don't hear so well anymore (wonder why) and he was very patient with me and not in a hurry to get off the phone.
OBTW with the less expensive finish, the book advises you to be careful with the solvents used to dry out the cylinder before shooting or whatever.
They also included their official Cimarron "I'm Your Huckleberry" bumper sticker. I'm not a bumper sticker type but it just may go on the old pickup.

The charcoal finish was the least expensive??
I thought standard blue would be the lesser one.

On another post, Fingers McGee related that the '61's seemed to shoot closer to POA, that is, not so high, as the '51 Navy
"Reply from Fingers McGee to JKelly question: So, have you found the '61 Navies come any closer to shooting on target at, say 25 yards?
(my) Uberti '61 Navies . . . shoot POA at 12 yds out of the box with no modification to hammer or sights. They are consecutive serial numbered Taylor/Ubertis made in 2007. The 2nd Gen '61s shoot about 2" high at 12 yds, again, with no modification to hammer or sights. By contrast; the 2nd Gen '51 Navies shot about 6" high at 12 yds till I opened the sight notch in the hammer. After that, they're down to about 2" high. I've never put them on paper at 25 yds . .. "

While the Ruger might be the best made BP revolver, the '61 Colts are the purtiest.

Tomahawk674...I could have that backwards but the gun I was sent looks black. Kind of
like a slightly dull powder coating. Definitely not blue colored at all. What do you think it might be? Can heavy bluing look black? Sure looks nice.

Geez, I guess I'm going to have to go shopping for a '61 now. Or maybe two so I can use them in the CAS shooting.... :D You guys have me all wondering what this geared creeping lever press thing is all about now. I never really looked but just assumed it was a double pivot like all the rest.
Hey Das Jeagermeister, I'm getting worred about you. Advancing age seems to be having you confusing guns n' girls. I know they both start with a "G" but... REALLY DUDE ! ! ! ! :D

Allison, from what I can see in pictures, charcoal blue is a very bright or light blue:
http://www.uberti.com/firearms/images/1873_cattleman_om_chblue_lg.jpg
If it looks dark then it's just standard bluing I think.

Tomahawk674...Went back to the Buffalo Arms website and you're right, mine is standard blue. Wonder why they call a pale blue finish "charcoal"? After seeing the picture you posted (thanks), am glad I ordered the cheaper finish.
This is my first experience with a "creeping" (is that the right term?) loading lever and at first I thought that the chambers had been bored oversize but they shaved off a nice ring from the .375 ball. Just easier to load.

Das Jaeger, small correction, the Army ordered 5000 Rogers & Spencers as their last cap and ball aquisition. They didn't put these to use though because the Civil War ended before the full productrion was completed and sold them off to Bannermans for I think, $1.50 each.

Also, NONE of the Rogers ever saw action .

Thanks, NobleSniper.
That's the one I can't bring myself to shoot (I shoot my originals).
The one with the white grips is an excellent shooter. It spits spent caps like a semi-auto.

Congrats on your pending acquisition NS. You'll love the way it feels in your hand. The 2nd Gen '61s are as good a point shooter - if not better - as the '51s. The creeping loading lever is easier to use than the hinged lever on the '51s - doesn't require as much pressure on the lever to seat the ball.
You can probably still get a set of the Custer grips from Earl Brasse over on the SASS wire. He bought up all of the remaining Sig Series parts earlier this year
