Hi Folks,
I guess I'm probably just looking for some moral support.... I'm thinking about regularly carrying a 4" 44 redhawk, loaded with spear gold dot 44 specials and hidden in a simply rugged iwb holster. I think this could be quite a formidable rig. What do you think?
So what large guns do you carry, how do you carry it, and why did you choose to carry it?
Thanks
WL

For around town, the largest I carry is an all steel Govt size 1911 in either .45 or 9x23. I carry these in a KyTac BraveHeart IWB
For woods walking, then a 4" Mtngun up to an 8 3/8th's" 629 in a shoulder rig if concealed, or a "Trail Rider" cross draw, again by KyTac

I occasionally carry a 4" 629. My best concealment arrangement uses a Hoffner's "Miurage" IWB kydex holster. It holds the gun high so that the cylinder rests on top of the belt which helps it be a little slimmer. Helps if the carrier is a little on the tall side.
I still use the factory rubber grips, which are pretty "full-size." If I swapped them for "boot" grips or other small wood grips, concealability would be even better, but I don't have a problem with it as it is.

The large guns I often carry are my 1911 Colt Combat Elite 5" in a Galco F.L.E.T.C.H. FBI canted strong side holster, my Ruger Redhawk 5 1/2" in a custom made leather belt slide holster, and my Beretta M9A1 in a shoulder rig.

I have been waiting 8 months for a Sparks holster for this beast. I routinely carry one or the other of a .45 Government, a full size .38 Super Gov't Model, or a 4" N-frame S&W Hand Ejector. This .500 S&W "Snubbie" isn't TOO much more weight than the others. My defensive handload is a 440gr bullet @ 800fps. This is roughly twice the smack of a 230gr .45 loading (Taylor Power Factor). I'm sure I won't wear it every day, but I will cary it when it suits me. http://i106.photobucket.com/albums/m247/matquig/DSC05273.jpg

I carry a large gun by comparison to the pocket gun craze that is so fashionable these days. Im in the rotation of a HK P7, BHP, Beretta 92, and J Frame.
Since this is a large gun thread I will say that I carry the HP and 92 most when I am out and about town like walking the dog and when I go on road trips. OWB belt scabbards for each of them.

I have a Milt Sparks #Axiom with Sparks 1 1/2" belts and
a IWB single mag carrier, all in cordovan colo, for a
S&W 1911 5" Bbl. Stainless STeel.
Sometimes it's 39 oz empty weight, what's an 8 rd
mag weigh, 9+ ounces? The sturdy Sparks
belt supports the holster well.
I think my S&W 625 5" Bbl. would be best carreied
in a vertical ( muzzle down ) shoulder rig, like an Alessi
Field Master. 45 oz empty

Formidable? You bet. Heavy and bulky? Yep.
I carry a Ruger Security Six 4" bbl in the same holster with the inside/outside straps. Works decently well, would not want to go larger, though, for CCW. I typically conceal it under a very loose/large t-shirt or a 5.11 vest, or coat (thank god it's approaching wintertime and will be much easier to conceal it full time without special consideration). I switch between IWB and OWB depending on mood/cover garment. If you haven't got a truley sturdy belt, order one from Simply Rugged when you order your holster (if you don't have it yet)
Before I started carrying the Ruger, I carried a Glock 17 in a Milt Sparks Summer Special 2 IWB holster until I sold it.
At the least, the Simply Rugged will make a nice OWB holster for the Ruger if you get tired of CCW. Good company, good people, good products, good prices.
I will be carrying a CZ 75 Compact soon.

I carry a few oddly large handguns, including things like 1895 Nagants, a silenced Browning Buckmark, a Mauser c/96, a short barreled shotgun, and similar.
I carry my HK USP 45 Tactical but with a non tactical barrel.
Not difficult for me.

It's been my experience that if I try and EDC a heavy handgun that soon afterwards I find myself carrying nothing. So, I'll just stick to my Ruger LCP; or, when I really feel frisky my Ruger SP101.
win-lose: For ten years I carried a .45ACP Colt Gold Cup Series 70 in an IWB holster from a local maker. I'm still using the same holster, but now a SA .45 S/S Compact has taken it's place. I occasionally carry the Gold Cup because I put many thousands of rounds in practice and competition through it and it's like getting up with an old friend.
SharpsDressedMan: Thanks for posting the picture - I wouldn't have believed it if I didn't see it for myself. It looks like someone took a picture of your gun from a fun house mirror! LOL. With the short barrel and the axis of the bore so high above the pivot point it must have one hellova bark and bite!
When clothing prohibits an IWB carry, I will put either a Glock 27 or a S&W 642 with boot grips in a DeSantis pocket holster. It is not pleasant to shoot the 642 with .357s - I can imagine what it must be like to shoot a .500 S&W snubby...I'd like to try it once for grins, but after that I think I'll pass.
Had a buddy in the Army that routinely carried a Glock 17 and a Ruger GP100 4" at the same time. Sometimes he carried a compact Kimber in his pocket as well. He was a little crazy though. One day for the hell of it he threw on his shoulder rig for his Ruger Super Reghawk .480 and carried that along with the other three just to show he could do it.
After that day though, he actually carried the .480 fairly regularly along with the G17.

I regularly carry a Ruger Blackhawk .45 (5 1/2in. barrel), and occasionally an RIA 1911. I carry both OWB under a flannel shirt-jacket which doesn't pass as odd here because it's cold. I'm still looking for a good OWB holster for my Pietta 1860 so I can carry that too :D

JohnKSa, I'm sure you are totally correct. Here's the thing, I already have this rig. The redhawk is my woods gun. I recently got the simply rugged holster and was AMAZED at how much more concealable the gun is with this holster. My edc is an sp101, but I really like the idea of 6 44sp over 5 38sp.
MarkAllen, That is one nice gun! I especially like the compact grips. I need one of those.

There was no reaction whatsoever wherever we went in Seattle. Which is to say, no police, no panics (mass or otherwise), not even a nervous glance. We were at the REI flagship store for a couple hours, Top Pot Doughnuts, down on the waterfront, and of course, all the streets around and between them.
earlthegoat, yes, my primary carry in openly, probably 98% in the summer months down to about 90% in the winter.

I have a bad back, but usually carry a Baikal IJ-70 double stack. It's not really a big gun, but it does get heavy after a period of time. I know I should find something smaller and lighter, but I can't find anything in 9mm that appeals to me.

Well, I only do so in the fall/winter, which here (North Texas) is a fairly short period of time.
Today was the first day (this year) that I actually carried an N-frame. Today's choice was a 4" M-25-5 in .45 LC. I also have an M-57 in .41 Mag. I will carry one or he other on any and all days that permit wearing a sweatshirt, jacket or coat, until "spring" (hereby defined as our first 80 degree day, probably sometime in March) comes along.
Note that I may substitute a steel framed 1911 for the N-frame at my discretion :)
Upon further review, I guess that I may actually get six calendar months where I can carry a larger pistol/revolver. In actuality, it only seems as if "winter" is two months long here...

Noalibi, with the fingergroove wood grips on the 500, five shots of my "warm" (375gr Remington Core-lokt bullet @1125fps in the 2 3/4") is enough to scalp the web of my hand. With the 440gr/800fps load, it is not uncomfortable, and easily manageable with one hand. The issue Hogue grips are cushioned on the web, and well designed for this gun, but are bulky and "sticky", handicapping them for "concealment". My main concern was weight. I initially bought an 8 3/8" 500 (because the seller was selling cheap) to explore the gun/cartridge, but it was a boat anchor. Then a 4" came my way, I sold the 8 3/8, hoping to genuinly pack the 4 inch gun. It was still heavy, and the front 1 1/4" was all compensator, and not really adding any velocity over the snubby, AND directing a lot of blast back towards my ears. That is when the snubbie replaced it, and loading it down to something like a .45 on serious steroids. Heck, other gun packers are carrying five shot snubbies! I just need to find some 500 speedloaders, and figure out where to hide them (I'm thinking two in a jock strap, but they'd be slow to draw....)

If i ever have to jump in a pool/pond/river to save someone from drowning i hope to god i remember to take off all the steel i have strapped to me so i don't sink to the bottom.
My normal carry setup is a 1911 5" full sized with a spare clip IWB and a Sig p238 in a pocket holster with an assortment of different Benchmade knives.
Believe it or not i do this with a tshirt as my only cover garment.Lately its been cooler and i can add a lite jacket which makes it a tad easier to not worry about if everything is hidden like it should be.

I just bought a 4" King Cobra and a Bianchi Strong Side/Cross Draw Holster (OSW). To break in the holster, I wore it all weekend (Friday-Sunday) as my concealed weapon rather than my Glock 36. I carried it stong side and was surprised at how easy and comfortable it was to carry. I didn't care for the cross draw method.
I live in Florida and baggy Ts and shirts that are not tucked in are the norm. It printed somewhat if I bent over. With the exception of my 1911A1, the King Cobra is the largest weapon that I have carried concealed. As I said I was surprised and wouldn't hesitate to carry this weapon.

Carried the rig all day yesterday, about 12 hours. Man that is a lot of gun. After about 5 hours or so, the comforting qualities became overshadowed by comfort issues. I don't think I'm going to be able to use this rig as an edc. Looks like the redhawk may just have to be satisfied as a woods gun. Back when I was 23 (and much lighter), I regularly carried a Glock 21 in groin carry at my job at the stop n rob.
I downsized to a Glock 23 for years, which I carried in cooler weather when I could easily wear a cover garment, and wore a P-11 or P-32 the rest of the time.
After I joined the Army, I put on 10 lbs, most of it muscle (I'm only 5'6"). After that, I had no problem concealing a 3 or 4-inch N-frame on my belt, with just a light cover garment. I have also carried a 4 5/8" Blackhawk, and regularly carry a full-size Para-Ordnance IWB.

The largest, heaviest revolver I pack on a semi-regular basis is a 4" 686. I made an IWB holster that rides high enough that the cylinder sits atop my thick belt. It draws easily, but can be a bit of a pain to get it back in the leather. I guess that's better than the other way around;)
I don't do that often though. That's a pretty massive gun. I feel fine packing a full sized 9mm, so that's generally what I go with on daily carry in the cooler months. Small IWB 9mm for the warmer months.

I carry this sucker in wintertimes, or anytime I can get away with a suitable cover garment without baking due to heat, or drawing any undue attention.
Now, I am usually the one in here jeering at those who say that it's impossible to carry large guns. I think that the industry, in cooperation with magazines, has convinced a lot of people that they are foolish if they don't buy two versions of the same gun: One to shoot and one to carry. I think that comfort is relative, larger guns shoot better and have more velocity, and you should adjust your wardrobe and lifestyle to fit the gun; not the other way around.
Someone who LIKES the idea of carrying will always say a big rig is comfortable. Someone who DOESN'T will never say that even a small gun doesn't feel like a tumor. It's a question of what you are used to and what you believe your life is worth.
However, my 1911 is actually pretty slim when you compare it to other autos. I use a fanny pack a lot, I also use a Galco Miami Classic and a Serpa belt-slide holster like the one Mainsail has.

SharpsDressedMan: Your choice of carry and that of several others in this thread would definately not be mine. However, it all comes down to whatever you feel comfortable and confident with.
The combination of comfortable and confident goes a long way in supporting mindset. I had the misfortune of being required to carry an inadequate caliber weapon (.38 Spec) and on two occasions the outcome could have been less than satisfactory if the perps had the time to overcome the initial shock.

I fully embrace my right to carry and happily accept the responsibilities and obligations that come with it. With that said, carrying my redhawk, iwb, for anything more than a few hours becomes physically uncomfortable (mostly the barrel digging into my hip/leg). Any recommendations on alternate carry methods (good concealment is a high priority on any rig I carry). I'm a family guy with small kids, but I do have wardrobe flexibility.

If you're good with a handgun and given your EMS skills, you could have a TV show based on your experiences - you know... if you ever had to shoot someone, you could immediately save their life so the perp can stand trial and be executed formally. Sounds like prime time to me! LOL!

Some years ago I was an assistant to a Botanist Contractor for a Survey of Poplar Trees up in the remote mountains of rural Nevada, for the U.S. Forest Service, under the Department of the interior.
I carried a 7 inch 1912 production Colt New Service Revolver in .45 Long Colt, on my Hip, 'Open Carry', and a Box of Shells in my Back Pack, and a few Speed Loaders, charged, in my front pants pocket.
There'd been word about prior troubles with Biker Gangs, and other difficult sorts, so...
Never once occured to me to ask if this was alright with the Dept. of the Interior, or anyone else, and, no one ever said anything, so...
Had a very old Blanket-sided Zinc-Steel Canteen that held something around a gallon, and damn if that thing's Shoulder-Strap did not bother my Shoulder after a while.
I hate carrying things...especially on long, ten, fifteen, twenty mile walking forays on uneven terrain, in the high and arid Mountains.

One of the most underated utility revolvers every made , when I live where CCW permits were available I frequently carried one , wish I still had my last Charter ,should never have sold it,alternative to that was the three inch heavily modified Model 24 I still own or a full size 1911.
Open carry in the far north was most often a fullsize 7.5 RedHawk or 4 5/8 Blackhawk in .44 mag , lower 48 my much loved 6 inch Security Six or the aforementioned 1911 ( whichever 1911 I currently possess ar a given time).
And yes some will say that a 7.5 RedHawk is prohibitively heavy ,however up there if you're cutting wood etc. you can't have a rifle in hand at all times and if you run into a situation where you need it NOW then you need it NOW.
And I'll likely at some point by one of the new short Redhawks for such carry (mountain gun) , but my original Redhawk is one of the few sidearms ( along with the aforementioned Smith and the S'Six) that I've owned forever and that will stay forever.
Now I live where open carry is illegal and CCWs are virtually unobtainable , but not for much longer.

Sometimes I'll stuff a S&W 686 Plus, 2 1/2" barrel in the front pocket. It has a bit of girth, but using an Uncle Mike's holster breaks up the profile.

I tote a SIG 220 Carry in an iwb holster regularly and do it comfortably well-concealed.

I carry a Government size 1911 in a Galco Royal Guard IWB holster. If I am not carrying the 1911, I will carry my Glock 21 in a Blade-tech Nano IWB. When I carry , I normally will wear a over shirt in order to conceal. Open carry is legal, I just dont like doing it because it attracts attention. I have never really been a fan of small guns for carry , although I can understand why some do.

Beretta 92FS - pretty big gun...
Nice holster for that 92, Im looking to invest in something similar so I can ditch the shoulder rig.

I pretty much carry a Taurus PT1911 OWB , I mostly carry openly around Olympia and Shelton area thanks to people like Lonnie and Mainsail . If I feel like downsizing I go with a M&P40 or my S&W 3913 .

My EDC changes on the weather. When it gets really warm, I go to my mouse gun, a 3" SP - 101 in .357 Mag carried in a super tuck.
During normal weather I carry a 4" 686+ in a Murage holster (I have found I needed to change the position of the carry loops on the Murage to the outside edge of the holster in order to keep the gun from fliping out of my pants.)
During the colder months, when I'm usually wearing a sweater and coat, I carry a 4" 625 (.45 ACP revolver) in a murage holster.
It all works good for me.

Well, a couple of weeks ago, after being unable to comfortably carry the 4" redhawk, I set myself up with a new rig. This has been working out very well for me.
Nice holster for that 92, Im looking to invest in something similar so I can ditch the shoulder rig.
I actually forget I am carrying it sometimes - ya get so used to it. I love the holster :)

Wow, you are nuts. That Mauser would be a b---- to conceal. Also, what's your theory with the Buckmark?
I might posit that "nuts" is worrying about what someone thinks about you carrying something which is 100% legal, conducive to one's well-being, and completely invisible and undetectable to begin with.

I carry my HK USP 45 Tactical but with a non tactical barrel.
Not difficult for me.
Same here, although mine has the threaded barrel, with a thread protector over it.
I use a Blade-Tech OWB holster that accomodates the underbarrel UTL. I really like it, since I use the USP as my nightstand gun, and keep the light on it. Not hard for me to conceal with just a jacket or a loose button shirt as a concealing garment.

I regularly carry a Sig P226 in a Crossbreed Supertuck. Even with shorts and a t-shirt, I've never had a problem concealing it (unless the t-shirt is too tight). Really, a good belt makes just about anything carryable.

It depends on how you define a "large" handgun. ;)
I have small hands, so a Glock compact like the G23 or G30 is large for me. Equally, a Smith K-frame revolver is large.
Wahoo95, maybe you need to attend more barbecues?
That's a nice looking revolver. :D
