So, by now most folks here have seen the video of the shooting outside the courthouse where the Robert Blake trial was taking place.

The shooter fired several times (I heard it was eight?). Multiple hits.

There are, I suspect, lessons to be learned here, and observations which can be made, both from the standpoint of the shooter and the shootee.

So, who would like to go first? <grin>

What lessons can we take away from this?

This just exemplifies what we already know…that gun-free zones do nothing more than make easy victims. The guy shoots and keeps on shooting, then just walks off. Imagine trying that in Texas or Vermont or Idaho. After the first shot everyone around the guy would have pulled out their guns and shot him down.

But of course, this will be used to prove the opposite...that more restrictions are needed.

That you can count on bystanders being just that, bystanders.

Things generally happen too fast for any meaningful reaction from distracted bystanders. Gun was out maybe 20 seconds. Who here can assess the situation and bring lethal force to bear on assailant in that time frame? Only victim could have.

Shot placement is everything. I think two hits, one in neck and one in arm. Neck shot missed artery - carotid?- by 1/2 inch. Bleed to unconsciousness/death in 1-5 minutes.

Shots don't incapacitate instantly. Victim was walking for a minute or so after assailant strolled off.

Lady Luck smiles on fools AND attorneys. Something to remember.:D

Tom,
We've already got a lessons learned thread going on in Strategies and Tactics.
