There has been increased chatter on the Sigforum.com board about the release of a Sig 1911 in 2004!!!! Models range from a "base" model to highly customizable models.
BS meters are up and down but take it for what it is worth.
A Sig 1911 with Sig reliabilty would be awesome.

I'd probably be interested in one if I could get one without front slide serrations.

Would that mean it wouldn't jam?
That'd be good, because then it would be like other good 1911's. ;)

While I'm sure it would be a quality piece, do we really need another 1911 clone? Next you'll see Glock, HK and Beretta making them.

A Glock 1911 would be an omen on the order of the sky raining frogs or a cow giving birth to a two-headed insurance salesman. The end of the world would most certainly be nigh. :uhoh:

Well since Singer ain't the same as they once were...
I'm gonna wait for Maytag to make one.
I figure this will be the next deal.
Wait all mine of various makers run and I can change the ( ahem) grip panels, and use either handed...dang all mine MUST already be Maytags...

While I think a 1911 made by Sig would be fine and dandy...and I may even pick one up for the hell of it...but I would have LOVED to see sig come out with something totaly new to the market. I would love to see a copmpletely new pistol from the ground up. I know its easier to say than do, but with all thier manpower I think it would be quite possible.

Interestingly enough, SigSauer's P-series use alot of the material short-cutting that the production 1911 makers get villified for, if not more so: stamped & welded slides; investment cast hammers, triggers and magazine catch buttons; sheet-metal stamped disassembly and and slide-stop levers... you get the idea.
I can hear it now.... "But SigSauers are RELIABLE cheap material guns that are expensive!"

That's MY point.
A SIG-Sauer is a gun designed around the ersatz materials and hurry-up manufacturing techniques, brand new as of 1975 plus some apparently satisfactorily cut corners since then. They work.
I just don't know if they can take the same approach to a 1911 and make it work as well. Nobody else has.
A P220 with properly located safety for cocked and locked carry and no other changes would have been a better bet as a shooter. But I guess their marketing expert said a 1911 would sell more.

Maybe it would also have a bulbous slide, slippery grips, high bore-line, lots of stamped and cast parts and be very expensive (though very reliable).
By the way - they are bringing one out...

Not really interested. If they make one I'm sure it will be just another Kimber with Sig Sauer stamped on the side.
Probably with a series 80 firing system too...bleh

An HK 1911? You mean a 1911 that is hugely over priced with parts that don't exchange with anyone elses (like the S&W 945) and a customer service that is virtually non existant unless your names starts with initials like "BATF" or "FBI" or "USMC"... Yeah, that would be great.
A SIG produced 1911? Why? Unless there are some interesting design changes, what advantage could it have over any other 1911 maker? A company names doesn't bestow any virtue on the product. Just look at the series 80 Colts of the last few years. They did something and only NOW are they making worthy 1911s again... but for the most part, I'm still jaded.
A Glock 1911? Yeah, right. I'm still waiting for that Glock pistol caliber carbine. Have you guys noticed that glock pistols look exactly like what a little kid can draw when he draws a gun in the hand of his stick figure policeman?

Fitting, seeing as how the Glock is "The Official Handgun Of The Coming American Police State (tm)."

Based on SIG's great reputation with consumers, I think many people (including me) believe they can potentially come out with a 1911 that will seriously compete with the BIG 3.
In general, 1911's (from the BIG 3 to Semi-Custom makers) are often perceived for not being as reliable "out of the box" as a SIG, Glock, H&K, or a Beretta. Although I don't believe its generally true, I think there is some truth to this perception due to inconsistent QC by current 1911 manufacturers or the fact they are made too tight by semi-custom makers. The SIG name has a certain cache and they have been producing some of the most reliable autos in the market today. Can they translate their SIG quality to the 1911? I think that is the hope for many who have had bad experiences with the 1911 and why there is so much hoopla surrounding a "SIG 1911". If SIG succeeds in bringing a 1911 that will convince naysayers to give 1911's a second or even a first chance I think that can only be a good thing. Its as if Porsche or BMW announced they would build their version of American institutions like the Corvette or a Harley Davidson. Heresy to some but a god-send to others. If any company can do it SIG can.
...I'll admit I love SIG pistols. They are my favorites. That said, if I were to buy a new 1911 I'd still get a Colt. They have been nothing but reliable for me. :D
