San Antonio and San Francisco were two agencies that issued the M58 Smith. There were probably a few 57s scattered around within the ranks, too. Can't recall any others offhand.

I believe Amarillo was one of the first. If I recall Skeeter Skelton the godfather of the 41 magnum was the sheriff of Deaf Smith County up in the panhandle of Texas. His influence may have had something to do with it.

I worked for the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office in the 80's. We were allowed to carry 44 mags and under. In those days we had to buy our own guns. Many carried 41 & 44 mags. I carried a 45 auto.

Not too long ago, many Sheriff's departments in NC would allow their deputies to carry whatever they could qualify with. Forsyth County would allow any DA revolver, but no SA autopistols. Several of the guys carried Smith Model 57s and Model 58s in those days.

Speaking of Skeeter, I believe he wrote that the Texas Dept of Public Safety Troopers were allowed to carry the .41 back in the day.

Some of those departments never seemed to know that there was a 'police load' of about 1000 fps .When they used the full magnum load many officers couldn't handle the recoil.
