Pump gun newbie question

I just got my first pump action, a Mossberg 500. I had a question about the action release button. If the gun is cocked, the action is locked and I have to press the button to release it.

However...if I dry fire the gun, the release automatically unlocks. I know this is supposed to happen when the gun is loaded and you are firing, but should this be happening when the gun is empty also?

Like I said its my first pump gun and im trying to learn the in's and out's of it.

Yes that is what is supposed to happen - not to be smart azz, but read the manual - there REALLY is a lot of good stuff in there besides the lawyer-warnings....

The action release is part of the trigger group.

There is no possible way for the barrel to communacate with the trigger group and tell it if there is a shell in the chamber, or if it has just been fired.

All the trigger group knows for sure is whether the hammer is cocked, or not.
If it's cocked, it locks the bolt.
If it's not cocked, it unlocks it.

Don't do a lot of dry firing without a snap cap in place. Not good for the firing pin. Just a heads up in case you don't know this.

You might want to do a bit of reading up on that one, McG.
