Are we all talk?

This of course is not meant as a flame or offense to anyone in particular; it is just my humble thoughts submitted as food for thought.

We have many great members here who post lots of articles that are anti-gun and written by anti-gun idiots. (Primarily 2dogs & Desertdog, but you guys also post excellent PRO-gun articles. Much thanks!)

In the threads, there is much wailing, eyerolling and gnashing of teeth, and we all do a great job of shredding the article and it's pitiful author.

That said, how many people actually write to the author or write letters to the editor of the newspaper/magazine/whatever? Wouldn't that do so much more good than just griping about it here? We're all just preaching to the choir here. A letter to the ed, if published, does a lot more good than a million threads here. (IMHO) Though we do have a lot of lurkers here, and of course I'm not trying to minimize the importance of THR, we don't have the same circulation as any major newspaper. I know it always does my heart good when I see a pro-gun letter to the editor in my local paper, especially since I live in such a liberal cesspool. Its encouraging to me. :)

I'm not trying to preach, and believe me, I should be the last one to preach since I am guilty of the same.

So here's some constructive criticism; why don't we try to direct our energies at the author/editor/whomever rather than "waste" them here. Oh sure, post comments, but better yet, post the letter that you just sent to the moron in question!

In kind, it would be wise to send letters of thanks and praise to those who get PRO-gun articles published. The good guys need to know they're not alone and their work is not in vain!!!

Again guys; I'm not trying to scold, lecture or preach, so I apologise if anyone takes it that way. As I said, I don't write that many letters either, so I'm not in a position to scold anyone. :)

Take this as a humble suggestion that we may all use to further and aid our cause!!!

Respectfully,
Drjones

I scan the UDel student paper religiously for any anti-gun article, and then write a letter to the editor in response. I've been published twice so far, with only two or three attempts.

To get published, keep it short and simple (250 words is the normal limit), and dont get into debating the little stuff, like 39% vs 40% or whatever. Stick to the facts, dont lie or exaggerate, and ask questions of the reader (ex: Why are DC and Chicago the most crime ridden cities when they have the harshest gun control?) instead of forcing information down his/her throat.

This is a very good way of going about it. Works well in conversations too.

"I think guns are bad because they kill people."

"So you really think that people would stop killing each other if they didn't have guns?"

Etc...

I write to everyone, both anti-gun, neutral and pro-gun. Newspaper, magazine, TV, online and politician (even politicians from other states). Anything from a brazenly false article to a minor mistake in a pro-gun article.

While it isn't on the commitment level or as effect as someone like Jim March, other than supporting pro-gun politicians and donating to pro-gun organizations, it's all I can presently contribute to the cause.

Might have something to do with my fanaticism about firearms or might be due to the fact I like to argue......errr debate.

Good thread. I think if we all sent just 1 email a day things would start to change. I do it.

I tell people if you want to sit on your a**, fine, but send an email off while your doing it.
