I recently acquired a 1841 Mississippi rifle. In the lockplate is the firm of Robbins, Kendall and Lawrence. The plate dates the rifle to 1847. The barrel tang has the correct date along with the proverbial two cartouches on the opposite side of lockplate and can be readable if I clean the wood. The barrel has an S B over P. The buttplate has the number 13 with the U.S.
On the opposite is a brass bar with the letter G and number 19.

The rear sight is the slotted type, nothing has been done there. No provisions for a bayonet.
Has this gun been altered like so many of them have for the civil war?
