I have just inherited a S&W. It has fixed sights and approximately a 4" barrel length. On one side it reads "38 S & W Special CT (O or G, can't really make it out). I assume it would be a G. On the other side of the barrel reads Smith & Wesson. It has the S & W logo between the cylinder and handle. It has a smooth wood handle and is stamped "V 512xxx" on the butt. I believe there is an S stamped on the crane, but can't really make it out for sure. 6 shooter. Any help would be appreciated(age, background, etc.)

It's a G.
I don't know why people get hypnotized by the CTG on a Smith & Wesson, it is just the abbreviation for Cartridge.

The "V" means it is a Victory Model version of the Military & Police ("pre-model 10" for the computer age) made during World War II.

Or sooner. Maybe somebody with the right reference book will be along.

V-1 = 1942
V-811119 = 1945.

Seems like 1943 or 1944 would be about likely.

You would have to request a $50 historical letter from S&W to pin it down exactly.

Can you help me? i got this revolver from my grandfather, i think the serial number is A 68026 any help will do. it says 38 S&W special CT

Axian: You have quoted an assembly number, not a serial number. The serial number will be stamped on the bottom of the grip frame, you may need to remove the grips to see it.
Also needed:
Fixed or adjustable sights?
Barrel length measured from forcing cone to muzzle.
Number of chambers in the cylinder?
Does it have an exposed or concealed hammer?

Post the above and I'll ID it and give you an approximate date of manufacture.
