My first AK (pics) and a few questions.

Well, I bought my first AK-47 today. It is a new Romanian SAR-1 made in 2003. I looked over three of them and this one was the best looking.

Questions:
1) It appears my rear site is crooked. The piece that appears crooked is the piece that has the numbers printed on it. Any way to fix this? What distances do the numbers represent? See photo below.

2) How do I install the green sling that came with the gun? I see where it attaches, but not sure which end goes where and how it is adjusted.

Yeah, I got it at the gunshow down south by the airport. Farmers Market. I normally just wait for the Cobb gunshow, but I was bored....

Anyone else have any ideas about the sight and sling questions?

Nice stock on there...and you got it just in time, i heard that the last of the SAR1s have already been imported.

The rear sight on my SAR-1 is the same as you describe. I'd advise shooting it before you try anything else. Mine shoots straight and it only took a little adjusting on the front sight. There is an after market rear sight that's windage adjustable, but I don't remember who sells them at the moment.

If you can't straighten the rear leaf and it's shooting off, it may be easier to simply adjust the windage on the front sight with the standard AK sight adjusting tool.

The numbers represent hundreds of meters. The "P" notch is the battle sight, which sets it at about 75 meters (???) IIRC.

Also, check the trapdoor on the butplate--you should have some secret prizes in there.

The numbers on the rear sight "ladder" represent meters. i.e. 400 means use the rear sight here when shooting at 400 meters. Based on a 100 meter zero. Meters are close enough to yards that I don't worry about it.

You can get the windage-adjustbale replacement rear sight at www.tapco.com.

But check your existing sight at the range before you assume you need one.

Yeah, I thought the stock looked better than usual. It isn't as light as most SAR-1 guns. I asked to select the one I liked best and was able to pick this one out of three I looked at. Besides the rear site alignment issue, the gun looks quite good.

Now I need to find a nice outdoor place to shoot it.....
