Well, I took my new CVA Wolf to the range yesterday. It was crowded as is usual this time of year what with hunting season being only a few weeks away.
I set up a target at 25 yards to make sure I was on paper. I loaded the rifle with two 777 pellets, and a 295 gr Powerbelt HP, and a Winchester 209 cap. My first shot hit about an inch high, and an inch left. Not too bad I didn't think. This thing has a bit of a "thump" when I shoot it. Not bad, just more than the 22's I'm used to.
Since this was my first time shooting it, I cleaned the bore a bit. By the time I had finished cleaning, and reloading, the rest of the line had called for a cease fire. I had one hole in my target. :D
After everyone else had checked/changed targets I got in my second and third shots. The three shots were touching, as a matter of fact the second one I had to get the binoculars to even tell I had hit the target, they were almost on top of each other.
I made a couple of scope adjustments and got it hitting dead on at 25. Then fired a few more shots. I found that after three it started getting hard to ram the ball home, so I started to clean it at least after two shots. Things went a lot smoother after that.
I moved the target back to 50 yards and found I was hitting about an inch high at that distance. But by then I knew my wife was getting tired (she was waiting in the truck) so I packed up and we went home and cleaned the gun good. I'll probably take it back in a day or so and put a few more rounds through it and fine tune it.
If I'm an inch high at 50, any idea what I might expect at 100? I doubt I'd ever shoot at a deer that far, probably couldn't see one at 100 where I hunt, but it would be nice to know.
I'd never fired a BP rifle before. I've seen the smoke from others shooting of course, but it was funny having to wait for the smoke to clear before seeing the target. :) Also I was surprised how I could feel the gritty soot when running a patch down the barrel, and could feel that disolving as I swabbed it. Interesting.
