I have and carry a 640 .357 a fair bit and also carry a 649 in .38 from time to time both of them are great guns low maintance and go bang!! when you pull the trigger.I have a range in my back yard so range time is no problem but I find that I will put about 50 rounds through one or the other every week.they are fun to shoot and I for one would have no trouble betting my life on either one.YMMV

My carry gun is a pre-agreement Smith & Wesson model 60 in .357 magnum. It's a dandy. It's surprisingly accurate out to about twenty yards, and to my amazement, isn't much more difficult to shoot than a K frame with a short barrel.

The 640 that was mentioned looks like this:

The model 60s that I've seen run somewhere around $425 +-.

The model 640 is probably going to be in the same price range.

Where in KY are you? If you are near Flemingsburg or Morehead, I know several guys who will order anything you want.

If you want it primarily for HD and only occasional CCW I'd suggest going with a 3" J-frame or 2.5" or 3" K-frame. The longer barrel will give you a bit more velocity, very helpful in .357mag and even more so in .38 or .38+P. The K-frame will be important for controllability and follow up shots if you might use .357mag.

Some suggestions (some only available in 2") with bobbed or concealed hammers:
-S&W 640
-Taurus 850 or 650 (not a Smith, but a similar enough design to feel familar to a Smith owner)
-Taurus 85 or 65 CH (bobbed hammer design)
-Taurus 905CH (9mm, bobbed hammer)
-If you must have a small frame snub (no medium frame snubs) and you really want a .357 you may want to consider a Ruger SP101 for extra controllability (available in bobbed hammer and/or 3" but I'm not sure you can get both in the same gun).

With hammers (you can always take it to a smith to bob the hammer and convert it to DAO):
-Taurus 85 or 605
-Taurus 905 (new 9mm)
-S&W 60 (.357mag)
-S&W 36 (.38spl)
-S&W 65LS (3" K-frame)
-S&W 66 (available in 2.5")
-used 2.5" or 3" K-frame
-Ruger SP 101 (see above section)
-If it isn't too heavy for you for your occasional CCW a 2.5" S&W 686 or 3" Ruger GP 100 are very nice guns as well (but they are the largest medium frame guns).
