Or, Never take an axe to a gun fight :D
CEDAR LAKE, Ind. -- An off-duty police officer dressed as an ax-wielding man in what he intended to be a Halloween prank was shot and wounded by a man who believed he posed a threat, investigators said.

The shooter fired at Rick Conoway as the St. John police officer emerged from a wooded area and approached a Halloween night bonfire party outside a home, Lake County sheriff's spokesman Michael Higgins said.

Conoway was taken to a local hospital, where he was listed in stable condition with two gunshot wounds to the face.

Sheriff's authorities, who were still investigating the shooting Sunday, gave this account:

Daniel Frederick, of Cedar Lake, arrived at the party and was told by people there that police were looking for a man in a gray sweatshirt who was wearing a white mask and carrying an ax. They also said he had been seen running after children in the neighborhood.

Frederick returned to his nearby home, picked up a .32-caliber handgun and brought it to the party.

Partygoers heard dogs barking and saw a man in the woods, who was actually Conoway playing a joke at the party.

Frederick yelled at the man that he had a gun, and then fired two rounds into the ground as Conoway approached.

When Conoway continued approaching and got to within 10 feet, Frederick shot him twice in the face, investigators said.
He'll have fun explaining those scars for the rest of his life.

The discharge of live rounds is a good indication that it's time to end the prank.

I know it's more handgun/technical than L&P but...

But if WI passes CCW, time to rethink that Kel-Tec P32.

Two to the face, and only "wounded".

I suppose if it was a real goalie mask it could be significant protection, but a fake halloween thing?

Two to the face, and only "wounded".
Lot of angled/rounded bone in the face and head.
The shooter was using a handgun, and a relatively puny handgun at that.
No guarantees.

(Hey! Lay off! I said relatively. All handguns are puny, but .32 is more puny than 9mm or .45 or .454.)

Good marksmanship. Deputy Dufus was lucky he was armed with such a wimpy gun.

My thoughts exactly. Way to make good hits when the chips are down. And in the dark !!!

I am sure that the cop decided to play a prank on the party. Obviously some people were in on it. The cop probably thought they had turned the tables on him and the joke was on him ( fake gun..............). Or maybe the cop thought that the other people that were in on it had decided to make the gag more dramatic. I am sure that the cop didn't knowingly advance on a guy that he thought was firing live ammo.

Maybe I am totally off base, but where I work, pranks like this are pulled all the time. I can see all of this happening with no problem and no one involved knows the whole story.
Guy decides to scare people; some know, others don't.
One guy doesn't know about the gag and draws a gun, but the people in on it think it is part of the gag intended to shock them. The other people who arn't in on any of it don't know what to think. Remember, this was on halloween. People are expecting scary pranks.
They may have been drinking, but I don't think that played any role in what happened.

What ever happened to moving the outhouse or cow tipping or lighting a sack of dog doo on fire on the neighbors porch?

NO kidding! :(

I'm wondering more and more about this guy who felt so threatened.

Obviously the people in on it missed the "Okay, this is getting out of hand" boat.

Somewhere "Axe? vs. Gun?" didn't click. Sad.
