I have the opportunity to buy a S&W 60-3 for $400.

Mechanically it is pristine, locking up tighter than a Colt. The finish is also very good with only minor brushing from holster or pocket. The bore is perfect and the chambers are a bit dirty, but not worn or corroded. There is some blackening on the front of the cylinder, but the rear is unblemished and there isn't a spec under the ejector star. There is no sign of cutting in the frame above the cylinder/barrel gap. I'm no expert, but it seems unlikely more than a handful of rounds were fired through it.

Only the wood grips show any wear, and I can't figure out why they don't seem to match the apparent marginal wear on the rest of the revolver. Maybe they aren't original? They fit perfectly.

No box or accoutrements.

Comments, please. -Backpacker 33

Just check for end-shake and if it all checks out, go for it. A steep price for a revolver, but it should last forever. I lost one years ago (a thief) and have never quite gotten over it.

Thanks for the info. End shake is as close to zero as I can determine. VERY tight gun. My thought is to send it to Cylinder & Slide for one of their special packages for these.

I saw around 5 or 6 Model 60's at our last gun show. Not a single one was under $500 and people were still buying them. If I could get one in good shape for $400 I would be all over it.

maybe they aren't. or maybe it was carried a lot in a holster that didn't protect the grips.

Earlier this year I bought an unfired model 60-3 for $500. I thought the price was fair, from others I saw.

Bought my wife a Model 60-15(3 inch barrel) last year. She had only shot one handgun in her life before then(about 5 rounds). I was suprised at how well she shot the gun. I thought maybe it was beginners luck but the next time she had it out she shot just as well with it. I really, really like it. I would like to have one myself. It really is a good shooter. Hers was new and I gave like $550 for it. i was lucky though, S&W was offering a $50 rebate at the time so after getting that back I only had $500 in it. I had seen the same gun at a local gun show 2-3 weeks before purchasing hers for like $619.
