to Adam 12 they always used revolvers on T.V. the one show that comes to mind that didn't in the 60's was "The Man from Uncle" with those strange Walthers/carbine look.
I think Jim Rockford carried a Colt and all Clint Eastwood Dirty Harry was about
big bore Revolvers.
I was trying to think of any older show series that used and auto, and not revolvers?
now it the other way around you never see a revolver on T.V.

Magnum P. I. frequently carried a 1911. When he did use a gun. The bad guys on Get Smart and Mission Impossible were often seen with P-38s or Lugers. Did Berreta carry a Berreta? (On TV, not in real life). I can't remember.

Maj. Dad is thinking of "Tales of the Gold Monkey." Underrated show that tried to take the success of Indiana Jones and run. It failed after a short run.

Last regular show that featured revolvers prominently was NYPD blue. Sipowicz (sp?) carried a S&W snubby and Diane (dark haired lady cop) carried late model shrouded Detective Special.

I really enjoy having David McCallum back on weekly tv after all these decades. The doc on NCIS.

John

P.S. - Some trivia I remembered about fan mail.

"Although the show aired at the height of the Cold War, McCallum's Russian alter-ego became a pop culture phenomenon. The actor was inundated with fan letters and a Beatles-like frenzy followed him everywhere he went.[1] He was popularly referred to as 'the blond Beatle'.[3] While playing Kuryakin, McCallum received more fan mail than any other actor in MGM's history."

In Tales of the Gold Monkey, Jake Cutter was an ex Flying Tiger(I don't remember why he left). He carried a 1911 auto in an (if I remember) fast draw holster. In one episode he had to draw against a Japanese officer who was using a 1873 Colt in a western gunfighter rig. Tightrope comes to mind. Mike Connors played an undercover agent around 1960 and he used a small semi-auto he placed on his waist in the rear where it was well hidden. It's the only show I can think of from that era that had a semi-auto. I'm afraid I don't remember the make or model but maybe similar to James Bond's Walther PPK. I"ll check YouTube.

I got tired of checking this thread to see if anybody remembered

I SPy Robert Culp as and Bill COsby played spies - their cover
was Culp was a Pro Tennis Player and Cosby was his trainer. They
carried, respectively, A P38 and a Colt Commander. I figure for logistics
the COmmander would be a 9mm - most 1911 prop buns were chambered
for 9mm Luger anyway, they function better with 9mm Blank ammo and
it is easier to procure.

Another show on TV where you hardly see a revolver was the
TV Series, Combat - WWII platoon in the ETO starring Vic Morrow
MOrrow had a Thompson, the LT incharge had an M1 Carbine and
I would hope a 1911 with that POS M1 Carbine.

ah, now I remember
Robert Culp = Kelly Robinson
Bill Cosby = ALexander Scott
It is a landmark TV Series - first show for an African AMerican
shared star billing. & he played it serious - I was
maybe 11 or 12 and was initially disappointed he
was not being funny but got into the series they
played the gun play well like pros. well for TV yah know.

Tubbs carried a Smith and Wesson Bodyguard mostly, though he picked up a P220 toward the end. Tubbs' real go-to was his shotgun, however.

Crockett used the Bren 10 only for a couple of years before ditching it and going to the Smith and Wesson 645, then the 4506.

David E - Magnum PI's 1911 - at least one of them is in the NRA Museum - it's a 9mm Luger chambered model - it's what the prop guys used because as I stated befoere the 1911 cycles better with 9mm blanks than .45 ACP blanks as well as the 9mm blanks being a lot more plentifyl/available.

on a different note: Jack Web in Dragnet wanted the show to be authentic He found out after the first season the LA plainclothes cops
carried Colt snubbies not S&W - or the other way around - anyway he
switched to have the same as the real cops.

You guys really need to check out IMFDB.org, if you haven't already.

I think I may have watched every episode of the original Law and Order, and you can see the progression from revolvers to automatics. When the show first started, both cops (Greevey and Logan at the time) had .38 snubbies. I'm not sure if Logan got a Glock before he left, but Rey Curtis definitely had a Glock. There was even one episode where he and Lenny Briscoe rib each other on their guns at the range. Briscoe was old school and hung onto his snubbie, and Rey was saying how Briscoe would have to make every shot count because he'd be out after six shots. After Briscoe left, Joe Fontana had a revolver, albeit a larger one, but after he left, everyone had Glocks.

Life On Mars - the American version - was a celebration of the snub-nosed revolver.

'Course, it was a modern cop back in the 1970's, but still.

For the first season of Millennium, Frank Black's old FBI sidearm was a two-inch Chief's - at least in flashback. When he got his gun out of his filing cabinet, it was a Model 19... I think. I'm trying to remember if it had the ejector shroud. It definitely had the adjustable sights, though.

With the second season, Frank switched to a 1911.

Not sure what he went with for the third season when he rejoined the FBI.

Smith & Wesson Model 29 with 4" barrel.

http://www.imfdb.org/images/thumb/e/ed/M29S%26W4.jpg/400px-M29S%26W4.jpg

Smith & Wesson Model 29

Porter (Mel Gibson) uses a blued Smith & Wesson Model 29 4" with S&W factory combat grips for the majority of the film after buying it in a pawn shop. It is not a Smith & Wesson Model 27 as previously mentioned, as the diameter of the muzzle and cylinder chambers is clearly too large to be .357 Magnum. Also the barrel on the Model 27 has a slight taper while the barrel on the M29 is a heavy "bull" barrel. In addition the forcing cone on the Model 27 is visible and the cylinder is shorter on the Model 27. The cylinder on the Model 29 fills the frame. Like the one used in the movie. In addition the Model 27 has very fine checkering on the top strap. Observe the stills that show the top strap on the revolver being used by Mel Gibson. It's smooth which is another feature of the Model 29.

Spencer (for Hire) had a BHP IIRC, and Captain Sisko Hawk carried a Mdl 29(?).

In the books, Spencer went to a BHP after being a revolver man, and I'm sure one of the book Hawk's hand cannons was a 29. In the show, Urich's Spensah had a Beretta 92FS (and later a Smith and Wesson Model 36 - or it could have been a 2" Model 10 - Urich was a big dude). Hawk, had that beautiful stainless/nickeled Colt Python 6" (with a stainless/nickel SIG Sauer P230 for backup).

(And I'd always wanted Captain Sisko to be confronted by some badness, step off the bridge, and come back in shades with a fingertip leather trench coat and lambs wool collar and proceed to kick much tail.)

The boys in Riptide (the one with the pink helicopter)?

I loved that show. The only gear I remember them using was the grenade in the glass mason jars, dropped from the pink lady.

As I recall, the revolver Jim Rockford kept in his cookie jar was an S&W Model 19, 2-1/2" barrrel. In one never-to-be-forgotten episode, he took careful aim, using two hands, and shot out the engine on a Cessna aircraft.

foghornl: Another short M19 was carried by Dennis Farina's charactrer, Det. Fontana, in the "Law and Order" series.

Jack Webb, as SGT, later LT, Joe Friday, carried a Colt Detective Special in a cross draw holster through most of the "Dragnet" series. I am told he later carried a Chief's Special, but I don't recall that.

oldguy53: I agree with most of what you wrote in post #15, except that in "Tales of the Gold Monkey," main character Jake carried a Mark VI Webley. Once, his sidekick heard gunfire in the distance and said, "That's Jake's Weatherby." Some writer sure got his wires crossed. Roy Weatherby hadn't even started marketing his fine RIFLES at the time the show was set.

In "Vegas," when Tom Selleck's character bought the Monticello casino, he was seen to be carrying a 1911-type in a Yaqui slide holster. Probably the same one Selleck carried as Chief Stone in the series of Robert Parker novels made into TV movies. Selleck is a real life firfearms enthusiast, and has undoubtedly had some input into the props he's used on-screen. In "Crossfire Trail," a TV movie based closely on the Louis L'Amour novel, he used a Remington and a S&W, as well as an 1876 Winchester.

"Magnum PI"'s sidekick T. C. occasionally used a Model 15 S&W Combat Masterpiece .38, carried in a GI shoulder holster. Other guy, Rick, used a Walther PPK and also had access to some cool submachine guns.

Anybody recall a 1966 TV series called "T.H.E. Cat"? A very young Robert Loggia played T. Hewitt Edward Cat, a retired acrobat and reformed thief who hires out as a bodyguard. He carried a Walther PPK, and in one episode, he was in a car chase on a desert highway, and sometimes stood up and fired over the windshield of his Corvette.

This is a fun thread.

Hot picture, if with a photoshop of an anachronistic Beretta.

They didn't have 92's back in the Police Woman days.

Though, Angie's legs were weapon enough for me.

to Adam 12 they always used revolvers on T.V. the one show that comes to mind that didn't in the 60's was "The Man from Uncle" with those strange Walthers/carbine look.
I think Jim Rockford carried a Colt and all Clint Eastwood Dirty Harry was about
big bore Revolvers.
I was trying to think of any older show series that used and auto, and not revolvers?
now it the other way around you never see a revolver on T.V.
Rockford was a convicted felon and thus not legally able to carry anything.

I watched her in Rio Bravo Sunday night, and Angie's character didn't mess around. Chance (John Wayne) needed some sleep, so she waited outside his door two times. The one time we actually got to see her, she had a BIG double-barreled shotgun in her lap.

Not TV, but in the movie Ronan with the great chase scene around Paris, The U.S. agent played by Robert de Niro shows up in the French LEO shop
and they ask him what sidearm? He sez a 1911 and they start
calling him grandpa until the first shootout - Bobby does a
nice set of double taps and reload with the spare mag.

I read somewhere that the 1911 Selleck carries in Vegas is one of his own. Don't know if its true or not.

Apparently Steven Seagal is a huge M1911 man, which is why he always carries one in his movies. I heard some of them may be his own as well.

I remember THE Cat very much so, that was "65 or so. We had it on CTV but it was unfortunately short-lived. I just recently, several weeks ago, saw some scenes on You Tube.

I'm either mixing up threads or most of this was all on page 1 and 2 of
this thread
I SPy
Culp = Kelly Robertson = P-38
Bill COsby = Alexander Scott = Colt COmmander

also when ever you see 1911 variants in TV
they're very likely chambered in 9x19 blanks are
more readily available as well as being more reliable
to work the slide. and in the opening credits for
Magnum PI you can see the flutes on the magazine
The NRA Museum has one of the 1911s used in Mag PI
and indeed it's a 9mm

I still think Tightrope was a small .38 snub - I was about
9 years old '60

Very short-lived series called "Bearcats" set in 1914 with two guys in a 1913 Stutz Bearcat who carried Colt 1911 .45 Autos. Rod Taylor and Dennis Cole starred.
