Shot the 340 for the first time today...

Wow..... gun goes "bang", wrist goes "ouch".... Actually it was not TOO bad. Started off with some .38's. Not too bad. I was in the 9+10 rings at 7 yards. So.... I knew I had to throw some .357 thru the gun before I left the range. Put one round in..... gun goes "Boom!".... I don't die, the earth is still spinning.... so I load her up and fire off 5 more rounds. Not too bad, all on 8 ring or better. It will take lots of practice though, and I'm going to need to find a round that works well with the 340.
All in all not a bad 20 minutes at the range (I was on lunch hour)... I think with lots of practice it will be a good carry gun.

I find the .357 loads bearable out of my 340PD, but after 20-25 of them, I start developing a HUGE flinch...:(

It will ring your bell with the hotter loads. The shock seems to travel trough my arms and directly to my head. 180gr hunting loads have given me the same sensation one feels from a good right-hook to the nose. I've even been able to 'taste' blood at times, or so it seems.
Yet I've grown fairly comfortable to some of the slower 125gr magnum defensive loads. If you've read the other recent thread on the 340 you'll notice I'm now carrying the Federal 125gr JHP Hi-Shoks. Be damned if I've ever chono'd anything but the Winchester +P 125gr 38 Specials out of the 340PD, which average 880fps in mine, but I've tested dozens of magnum loads through my 3-inch SP101. The Federal Hi-Shoks were the slowest in the SP101 and seem the most comfortable in all my revolvers.
My impression when shooting the first cylinder-full of magnums was about the same as everybody else's, "It's not really THAT bad." I can now handle about 50 per week. Still, it's fun breezing through a box of light 38 Special target loads from time-to-time.
