i have a standard 870 with 26" barrel. say i want to put a pistol grip and 18" barrel on it, would i have to register it as a pistol? i know it has to be an overall length of 26" or something to be legal. barrel shorter should be registered as sbr. my question is will the pistol grip with 18" barrel; being over 26" still be viewed as a long gun/rifle? or will it be treated as a pistol?

It's still considered a long gun, no tax stamp needed.

I dont think its a SBS until under a 18 inch barrel.

Under FEDERAL law, in order to not be considered a shot barreled shotgun, it must meet two requirements:

1. Overall length must be no shorter than 26". If the gun has a folding stock, OAL is measured with the stock open, AND

2. The barrel length must be no shorter than 18", measured from the face of the bolt in the closed position to the muzzle.

Some states have different, more restrictive, laws. I'm not familiar with the laws in WI.
