Stupid question of the week: Can I convert a Taurus PT101 .40 to 9mm?

I tried inserting an aftermarket Beretta 92 mag in my PT101 and it fits fine and actually feeds dummy rounds perfectly... can I simply swap a 9mm PT92 or 99 barrel and the recoil spring and use 9mm mags? Has anyone tried this?

I know you can convert Glocks across several calibers with the right conversion barrel... I'm not in love with the .40 round lately and was just curious.

Incidentally, a factory beretta 92 mag will not lock into the PT101... I suspect the mag catch notch is slightly larger on the aftermarket mag.

Well just for kicks i swapped the beretta barrel and guide rod/spring with the taurus'... they interchange beautifully. I certainly wouldn't attempt shooting a .40 in the 9mm beretta slide as the breech face wouldn't fit... but can anyone think of a reason why I shouldn't try shooting the 9mm beretta barrel in the Taurus? Other than possibly unreliable extraction/ejection what's the worst that could happen? Does the 9mm cartridge headspace on the case mouth? If so, it should be okay, right?

I know the Sigs require a conversion barrel because the breech face is different.

Anybody else have some input?

Seems like you are pretty familiar with your gun. If everything locks up tight and cycles smoothly, then I don't see what could go wrong (other than possible extraction issues). But those are famous last words.

Yeah... I might give it a try. Meanwhile I'll keep my eye open for a Taurus 92 or 99 slide/barrel.
