I'd say somewhere in the '75/'76 range. I too have a 28-2, although a bit earlier, with an S285xxx serial number. For some reason, I'm seeing a lot of activity with Model 28's of late. Perhaps they're coming into their own! :-)

Late '75 is a good guess. To get any closer you would have to send a history request to Roy Jinks. I too have seen a bunch of M28's lately. Almost had a second one but a few other great buys popped up. I plan on going back to that shop in a few days with some cash and see what happens.

In my case, I paid about $100.00 less for my M28 than my M27, but perhaps times are a changing. (hell, this was only a few months ago!!)

In my part of South Carolina, used N frames are very hard to find at reasonable prices. Not unusuual to see someone selling a used one for over retail for a new one. "Pinned and recessed" seems to generate a premium in some folks minds.

Greeting's Al-
A few years ago I bought about a 99 per center out
of Illinois for $270.00. It was a 6-incher with the S&W
target grips. A mighty nice find for an old southern boy!
Best Wishes,

Look on the bright side: You could've decided to build your collection around only 3" and 4" N-frames, and I've seen some folks with absolutely crack-smoking prices on those things.
There was a guy at the last show we set up at who had a table full of mostly postwar Smiths, including several stainless 3" N-frames. None of those were PC guns, or even particularly rare variants, and he had the cheapest one priced at $750. I ran back to our table and told my 'smith "I'm rich! My collection is worth millions! At least, according to that guy's prices it is..." :uhoh:

Maybe the increased popularity of the Mdl 28 is because they are no longer made?
S&W still makes N frames, but they are the weirded out ones that don't seem to be as popular as the old standards.
I gotta Mdl 28, no dash. And I'm keeping it. Tthhpppppppt!
