Saw something quite unusual at the range today...

or at least it was kind of new to me..

Ok, today I just felt the itch so I skipped work (I own my own business..no calling in sick!) and took a little trip to the range as soon as I woke up.

Everything was going nice as usual, but then this guy rented the booth next to mine and pulled out his .38S&W revolver. It looked just like mine -his is blued, mine is nickel) and the thing that freaked me out is that he had 3 boxes of .38spl at his side....I tried to warn him abouth the gun not being that caliber, the splitting cases and all the things I have read here on THR, but the guy looked at me funny and started shooting...my eyes could not beleive it when the guy finished the second box of ammo (100 rounds!!!!!)...I was really amazed and asked him if his gun was rechambered or anything, and he said that it was completely standard..upon inspection, I confirmed it is 100% exactly like mine. Ok, he splitted every single case and the accuracy was awful, but the gun worked!!

I asked him how the :cuss: he did that, and he answered that he only shot FMJ through it, and because the bullet is smaller in diameter, excess pressure just escaped through the sides, and that he did not shoot lead because he was afraid that the bullet would have a good grip and overpressure the barrel.....he admitted that he was giving that gun a slow death because the gun would eventually break up, but he did not want to have a gun he could not shoot.-nice spirit-.He also cut off the tip of the bullets with a file so that the weight reduction would make the pressure lower...

So, I (stupidly) took one of this guy's bullets and shot it...the recoil was a little more than I expected but the gun worked flawlessly..only shot 4 more of those because the guy said he spent all week filing those bullets...

Was the guy a gun-genius or was he just plain lucky??Can lead be used too??This was a great experience folks!

BTW, I am no longer doing that...I don't give any of my guns a slow, painfull death!!

If I don“t recall badly, the Murphy law says: "If something is stupid but it works, then it isn't stupid!!"

Ok, the guy is a lucky idiot!

What can I tell him to quit doing that to a very nice gun?? Please give me some VERY technical examples!

Why?
His gun, right? He's already admitted he knows that he's destroying it ... what more can you do? His choice.

Suggest reloading, maybe.

I can't imagine, for the life of me, why someone would do that. They buy a gun, they DON"T buy the correct ammunition, and shoot it anyway.
He won't own a gun he can't shoot. Why not ? If you own a diesel truck and you pull into a gas station that doesn't have diesel do you put gas in it and say: " I won't own a truck I can't drive" ?

The thing that really kills me is this; He spent the time and effort to file down bullets to decrease the weight (again  ) instead of taking the same amount of time or less to simply handload the correct ammunition.
On top of all this, he doesn't get any accuracy. He shoots just to make noise.
I would have had this conversation and felt the bile coming up in the back of my throat. What an idiot. This guy isn't just a fool, he is a damn fool.

Gun genius ? It doesn't take a genius to use the wrong ammunition in a gun. It doesn't take a genius to ruin a perfectly good gun for no good reason. It doesn't take a gunius to do something he knows is wrong, yet does it anyway.
Lucky ? What would be lucky about it ? Lucky he even knows where the bullet lands ?

Anybody this stupid is a threat to themselves and every one around them.

Purposely ruining a classic revolver :cuss: : :fire: :banghead:

Did this clown's mother have any children that lived ?

as funny as it may be, he is an only child.

No handloading, it is illegal in peru. Only Factory ammo.

JUst another question..would things go even worse if he used LRN?

Sounds awfully stupid to me.

I'm sorry to hear loading your own ammunition is illegal in Peru.

Yep, it is illegal, as well as owning any gun that has a power over 40 kg/m. (that is 9mm and larger:cuss: )

I thought his gun was supposed to blow up by firing .38 spl...after all, it is a top break S&W from 1880!!!!!!!

OK, Rogelio, that explains things. I wondered how he got .38 Special to fit in a .38 S&W chamber, but those old guns had no shoulders in the chamber. The cases rarely split; the difference in case diameter is not big enough, but they do bulge as you say.

I don't know if he is going to destroy that gun with .38 Special or not. The first thing to go is usually the joint where the latch is, so as long as that is tight, things should be OK. Standard pressure .38 Specials are not that hot, but I sure hope he doesn't shoot any +P or +P+ in that gun.

What I saw him shooting was Aguila ammunition..really did not pay any attention to the grains, but it doesn't matter anyway because he tipped the bullets off!!

No +p or +P+ here, also illegal.

I hate this stupid a$$ gun laws!!!

My bad. Sorry, I didn't realize he was in Peru. I guess if that is what he has to work with and he is getting away with it, then good for him.
Without paying attention to where he was located I assumed someone in the US was doing this.
