help with older smith 38

hi i am trying to figure out what 38 i have.

i think it is a k frame 5 screw(4 screws on frame one infront of trigger guard)
blue finnish fixed sights 6in barrell
38 s&w special ctg on barrell
3 lines of stamps inside yoke appears like

serial number is c 1402xx

any help on this gun, i cant find anything on the net.

sure sounds like a military and police what some people call a pre model 10
i think the c numbers were from the 1940s and 1950s but maybe somebody with the book will look it up for you

The serial number places it between 1948 and 1951 my guess would be 1949. The numbers inside the yoke are assembly numbers and little help. The 38 SW chambering makes it a pre Model 11. Please provide barrel length.

He said it says .38 Special on the barrel.

It's a pre-model 10 M&P.

thanks abunch, i was going nuts trying to figure out what gun this was. it belongs to a friend of mine and his dad passed and left it to him.

he will be excited to find out about this.

If your friend wants, for $50 he can get a letter from S&W. Or he could call and they will tell him when it shipped out of the factory.

No, they actually won't tell you if you call them about older guns.

All of S&W's old records were transfered to Roy Jinks and the Smith & Wesson Collectors Association several years ago.
