Load Development Part 1

For months I've been using the same load in my .270, with very little variation:

52.5gr H4831sc
130gr Ballistic Tip
CCI LR Primer

When testing batches of that load, or slight variations, I've always went with groups of 7. According to Handloader, as well as a few people I've talked to, 7 rounds gives you the most information for your dollar, before you hit that point of diminishing returns.

However, now that hunting season is about over (at least for Oregon), I'm looking to do a some load development over a wider range of bullets and powders. I picked up different brands and styles of 110gr, 130gr, 160gr, and 170gr bullets, and I'd like to begin testing this fall.

My question is this: since I'm starting with such a wide range of bullet weights, and each will require different tests with types and loads of powder, what should my testing groups be? I've seen pics posted of 3 and 4, just to slim down the choices for futher development, but I'd like to see if I can get a consensus on what to go with (a lot to ask for in an online forum!).

Any information you guys would like to share would be appreciated. And while I'm posting, here's a pic showing last Tuesday's success (my first buck). Not a trophy, but with the snow moving in fast and the last day approaching, I took him. It's a great feeling to drop something with a round you made yourself!

Frank,
Read this and see if it is helpful to you.

Even if you don't use it you will probably be able to get something out of it. I have used it and got up to speed fairly quickly.

You can search here and fin more threads like this:

I'll follow your posts as I have a .270 so I'm interested in what you find.

Thanks, I'll definitely get to reading.

Also (copied from site):

.270 Winchester using H4831
130 grain bullet, 60.0 grains (O'Conner's load)

Holy smokes! 7.5gr above what I've been using! Might have to slowly work my way up to that.

Why? From the picture it looks like your load works just fine.
