Have any of you heard that opening a jar of peanut butter in the stand will attract the deer better?

I have not heard of this bringing deer in to shooting range. I do like peanut butter and honey sandwichews while i the stand. No parade of deer coming to see what the smell is. Perhaps some smeared on a branch that could be drifted by the wind. Deer are curious animals and may come investigate.

Some people, myself included, use vanilla extract as a cover scent/attractant, I can't see why peanut butter wouldn't work as well. It certainly won't scare the deer off.

If deer can smell the peanut butter (opened in stand) then they can also smell you.

I'm not saying "don't try it", just pointing out that you will need to have the PB in another spot.

Thats really a good idea. Two jars of the creamy stuff and smeared on trunks of trees will definitely blow the good smell around and draws the hogs and deers within range.

Walmart sells them for cheap esp the store brand .

screw a lid to a jar of peanut butter to a tree and then cut the bottom out after screw'n the jar to the lid. Place it high enought to make the deer work for it and have fun. Even deer that have never had peanuts seem to love the peanut butter.

I think I may try opening up some this evening, and then put some on a tree and let you guys know how it went. Qjaq good point lol, but when the squirrels start moving good that's when my deer come out.

I had a buddy that hunted with me in VT, and he swore he never saw deer until he lit his pipe. Who knows what works? But if you have something that does..... use it.

Remove the lid from a jar and screw the lid to the tree. Then cut the bottom out of the peanut butter jar and screw to the lid. My brother shot a huge doe last season with her nose buried all the way in the jar. Of course, he does have pics on his game cam of coons with their head in the jar too.

I'm no expert but I've said this before and believe it to be reasonably accurate at this time:

The answer to such questions is "it depends" on how highly pressured the deer are. I think that in low-pressure situations, then yes, it could easily attract them (it might). But where most of us hunt, in medium or highly pressured areas, I think that if it attracts any at all it will be fawns (6 month olds) or maybe 1.5 year olds. Older does and espec. older bucks ain't gonna fall for that; to them, anything different is bad, even if it's a "pleasant" smell to them. They'll stay away. But if'n you want some younger deer, then sure.

FWIW, this year I decided that I'd put a little tube of mint toothpaste (that my dentist "gave" me) into my pack. First day hunting, squeezed some out onto a limb where I was hunting. The wind was at my BACK, and even though I had not controlled my scent well at all, here came a very young doe (I think a 1.5 yr old), and her two fawns right up to me, not alarmed in the least. Make of it what you will, but there it is; seemed to "work". But this was in fact in a low or medium-low pressure area (a rarity for me), and was very very early on in the bow season - they're not too wise yet at that point.

I think it is considered baiting if you smear it on a tree or branch.

It is considered clumsy if you drop a sandwich or two out of your stand...

Didn't put out any peanut butter tonight, I hunted a different stand a couple roads over, (hardwoods), but saw absolutely nothing, but plenty of squirrels, and a wasp crawling on the railing of my stand.

I use peanut butter while deer hunting, but it's for me, not the deer.

PB&J sandwiches help give me some calories to provide heat while I'm freezing my butt off waiting for a deer to show up.

Wonderfull if they're attracted to it, but they better not try and steal any of my sandwiches, might have to shoot 'em if they tried. :rolleyes:

i was eating a peanut butter and jelly sandwich last year when my buck I shot last year showed up. I guess he liked the peanut butter sandwich.

I might want to bring more sandwiches with me on opening day like i did last year.

Apple cores aren't bait, as long as the apple was eaten in the tree and the core was "discarded". Thats my story at least. :D
