Don't know where you are, but in the Midwest its the weather, snowfall, amount of cover, percent of the crops that are harvested, etc. Usually it's too warm with too much cover early. Best hunting is when the harvest is done, some snow on the ground. One tip about your dog, if not trained properly, most dogs will run way out in front of you and flush the birds way out of range.................

If you know where they are, when doesn't matter so much.

Quail can bend the space-time continuum, and disappear when the weather's not just right, or during most of the day. Pheasants can't do this. They just dig themselves underground.:D

Warm weather & wind is bad.
They will run like scalded rabbits and flush well out of range.

During cold weather and snow cover they will tend to hold tighter and flush closer within shooting range. Good heavy weed cover can be productive, and good cover & fence lines close to a food source is especially good.

Public hunting areas are hard after the first day of the season. The birds make themselves very scarce when the first car-door slams at 0-Dark-Thirty on the second day.

A free roaming dog that doesn't know how to point, or hold on point, will probably do more harm then good unless you can keep it working back and forth within 20 yards or less.

late season when temps are barely above zero, non-residents have long ago abandoned the snow and ice for civilized weather, an hour and a half to sunset, an enthusiastic, lab, and good remington 870 over your shoulder are the stuff of dreams!

Here in CA, I hunt them out of alfalfa fields. Usually within 1st hour or 2 after dawn. This is on very private land with almost zero competition. Don't even use a dog.

I guess it depends where you are hunting If your at a game preserve, well then any time is a good time.

If your out in the midwest - you want to wait for the crops to be harvested. Its been a pretty wet fall, so corn and beans are still in the ground in most places.

You can hunt the drainage in the fields, and early on thats a good bet. If you can flush them, your golden, but the birds will try to run into the corn fields and you'll never get them.

I like to head out when its a bit colder on the wild birds (again, preserve hunting is different). Last two years we headed to SD the first weekend in December. This year, I'll be there the weekend before Thanksgiving in order to bring some pheasant in for the celebration).

I like late season. The fairweather hunters are done and a lot less cover to have to work. However, birds are smarter and you have to be quiet and your dog(s) better obey and hunt close.

I think the best is after a snowfall, on a day without much wind, when it is about 15-25 out.

Hard to beat conditions like that.
