Deputy, suspect shot after bank robbery

FREEBORN, Minn. -- A deputy and a suspected robber were injured when they were shot after an armed robbery at First Community Bank, the Freeborn County Sheriff's Department said.

The suspect, a 53-year-old Freeborn County man, was followed into a wooded area just minutes after the robbery Monday by a deputy who had spotted his vehicle. He open fired on the deputy, then fired at another deputy who approached from another direction.

The deputies fired back, then persuaded the suspect to surrender. He was taken to Naeve and then Rochester. His name was not immediately released.

According to the Sheriff's Department, the man entered the bank around 2 p.m., fired several rounds from an assault rifle and demanded money.

Freeborn is about 15 miles northwest of Albert Lea.
