I have a Ruger SS BHG Vaquero in 3.75" barrell. I have only shot it a few times and then only using target loads. I have heard that the cylinder pin can jump out and cause the gun to not fire with heavy loads. If this is true is there any solution?

Thanks

never heard of that happening when the revlover is together properly.

If you want a locking base pin try belt mountian. This pin locks in place and shouldn't move when installed properly.

Kanook beat me to it...the Belt Mountain brand "cylinder base pin" is what you want if you have the base pin unlock issue.

Don't know if they offered one for the very short barrel Vaquero models, though. I have one of those "Sheriff's Model" Vaq's with the 3-3/4" or so barrel, and the base pin looks more like a nail....not much sticks out. It has to be short so that you can eject the empties.

First, if you don't have a problem with it coming out, you don't have a problem.

On the otherhand, a Belt Mountain base pin is a great investment for any SA, as it tightens up the cylinder play a little, and cuts down on frame wear.

They do make a Sheriff's Model locking pin for Rugers.

Until it comes out you do not have a problem. I have more than twenty Ruger single actions including sheriff's models. I had a problem with one. There was a large machining chip left in the lock pin hole. Fixed that with a drill bit. A couple of others the lock pin didn't seat properly, a round file to the base pin fixed those. Generally it is a simple fix to cure the problem if you have one. Just my experience. Yes I shoot 335gr. loads in my .45's with no problem.

The other common cure is an extra heavy spring for the latch. This is a problem usually found with heavy recoil.
