A friend and I were at a Gander Mountain last week when we came across a used Model 12 on the rack for 200 bucks. Now I'm usually his source when it come to firearms, but the model 12 is something I know little about. A couple other folks were looking at it so he decided to jump on it.

Mechanically it seemed fine, and the only faults cosmetically were wearing of the finish on the top and bottom of the receiver, no rust. Otherwise the thing looked pretty good.

I usually stay away from Gander as the prices here in the Milwaukee area are ridiculous, but the one year warranty on used firearms is a real plus.

So, how did he do?

(Unfortunately, no pics)

EDIT: We found that this particular specimen was produced in 1953.

If it functions fine and isn't otherwise broken, I'd say he did fine. The model 12 is a very good shotgun.

He did good. around here at Cabelas and Bass Pro shops highly worn specimens start at $400. I always look at them and compare them to the two I own. Most don't measure up. I wish we had a GM close, just for the competition. The nearest one is in Houston.

The only reason I cant think of that he got it so cheap was if the barrel or stock had been cut or modified some way. Like huntandfish says they are excellent guns and you can't really go wrong for that price!

You did well at that price. The Model 12 is a fine gun. It was called the perfect repeater in its day. It was just too expensive for Winchester to continue to produce.

You are just a no good rotten spaming ******!! Haha It definitely helps our income if we talk up Academy products. NOT! :neener:

But the heres the question of the century. Why worry about the price of the model 12 when there are Yildiz shotguns everywhere. It seems like everywhere I look there is a Yildiz. I mean just today I had one stuck to my mud tire. And yesterday I got one in my Cinnamon Toast Crunch box. What gives?????

I've actually had pretty good luck with the Gander Mountain in Waukesha, WI. Picked up a couple shotguns and revolvers for what I would consider to be a reasonable price.

If the receiver and barrel have matching serial numbers, I vote for "steal".

A month ago, the Green Bay GM had about six Model 12 in various grades. Five of the six ranged from $400 for heavily used normal grade to $900 for a worn trap grade. The sixth one had a Lyman compensator/screw-in choke on the end for $200. The gun was in pretty good shape, and seemed well worth the money, since I intended to cut it back to 18.5". I wasn't even going to have a twinge of guilt since it was already mucked up. However, the barrel and receiver were not the same serial number, and the barrel assembly protruded below the receiver by about 0.040". I had no idea if this protrusion was going to cause function issues, so I left it. I felt bad walking away, but my wife would have beaten me bloody with it(currently unemployed), so it all worked out for the best.
