I shot off my Dec. 17, 1861 Remington(1862) Old Army .44 today about five cylinders worth...
I forgot all my lube pills in the fridge ...[damn]
Loaded the first Cylinder naked with 28gr obf fffg Goex BP...din't bring .457" balls either used .454" & no lube pills...
First round first shot fired from my 147 year old Remington :O) ...chain fire first shot, and it din't surprize me, but I witnessed it along with three other guys. It was the chamber end the chamber after the one I fired had gone off too. (left of the hammer as if aiming the Rev.)
Din't hurt nothin' barely noticed it, one a my friends left the shed... LoL!
I had brought a ****load of .44" eggcart cards and used them to prevent further chainfires... and it worked :O)
I was poppin' bean cans at 25 yards killin' creamer bottles and makin' Thunder in the Desert...

Awsome! was it hitting POA with the 28 grs of powder?
Also, is the gun itself in perfect mechanical order? no pitting or other loss of metal?
Glad you had a good time with it, I love it when antique items can be brought back to life again.

I had repair the innards it needed ... that's all I had to do to it. Bore's clean jus' stain... the Clyinder pin T handle like most used 1861's I have seen used in their day and beyond has been removed or broken off(better that way). I hold a 6 O'clock 4" low at 25 yards & dead center on a bean can I figger it's close 'nuff :O)

That's a beaut and the period clothes make it perfect. There's a pawnshop show on tv where they get in antique guns, and the first thing they do is load and shoot them, from an original 1600's blunderbus to a trapdoor rifle. They haven't shown any blow yet, but I wonder how many do.

Dead beans make the six 0'clok news. Dozens of dead beans have been discovered in a remote section of the Mojave desert this week. The carnage was unbelievable according to witnesses. One witness claimed he saw the ghost of Wyatt Earp! We well have more on this as updates become available.
Looks like you guys had a blast SG.

It's nice to see an original being appreciated in the right way.
I'm always leery of original antiques but when you've got one that's as sound as the day it was made why not shoot it the way it was intended? I just need to find one that's in good condition at a price I can afford.... yeah, right! :D
Anyhow, great picture and good to hear that both you and the gun came through that chainfire without issue.

Well bein' a sort of time traveler I came thru the STARGATE in Area 51 in the Mojave ... bought a watch off a Guard and borrowed a Staff Car :O)
So sorry about the watch... and I wear a Brown, Tan, or Grey hat ... no black or blue hats ... Brown Hats match my leather and the dust on my boots.

Smokin Gun, I know what it must have felt like shootin' that ol smoke wagon, as I have shot my 1872 mfg. 1860 Colt Army converson. Nothin' like shootin an ol original hog-leg, as it will put a grin on yer face that will a last all day. LM

I love it! I've got a couple of Rogers and Spencer originals and I love shooting them and wondering about the tales they could tell! Let's me know that age isn't that big a thing!
Wonderful pic too! Thanks!!
