How do Makarov's Feel?

The price of the Makarov has me definitely interested, but I know that I'll never be able to shoot one unless I buy one first.
What popular guns are similar in feel?

Afternoon, I'm new here but have an indecent number of guns and ammo, ref question, a Makarov (to me) is somewhere between a Walther PP and a High Power, little boxier and clunkier than a PP but about 1/3 smaller than a BHP, not a bad gun at all, can be in the hands of a good shooter very accurate, sights are ok for a military issue gun.

IMHO - close to a Mauser HsC. Can you get an airsoft version?

What Roadkill said plus the grip is a little closer to 90degs than a Walther.

I always thought my Mak felt a lot like a Kahr. Much more like a Kahr then a PPK.

They feel great, for me they compare to my 1911's in pointiablity(?) and grip
comfort. One of the better guns ever made.::D

It feels, well, thin. Thats one of the main reasons I like the Mak. Watch out for the "thumb rest" girps, they suck. I have the "star" grips on my Mak...
You should go for it, it is an EXCELLENT pistol for the money. You simply can't find a better deal on a gun...

They are good guns, and very reliable, but the recoil is pretty sharp, much more so than a typical .32 and even more than the typical .380.

It is substantial. It fills the hand, but not weight forward--good balance for a military piece. It points as well as any pistol I've handled.

I agree....actually I beleive it is worth at least for times the current going rate. That would still make them cheaper than a Colt mustang.....
Truthfully....I am a 1911 man to the bone but I have gradually developed a great fondness for my two Circle 10 Maks.
Incidently, as an owner of Colts and Kimber 1911s...my beat up mil-spec Sistema is gradually becoming my favorite 1911!:D

I'm not sure I understand what people mean by "sharp" recoil from a Makarov. I used to own a Glock 23. Whenever I fed it 155 grain CCIs the recoil was severe enough to rattle my teeth. I considered the recoil of the Glock 23 (in .40) to be too severe so I sold it. Compared to the Glock 23, the Mak's recoil is mild, very mild. Just my opinion FWIW.

I know that, for me at least, the Mak recoils much less than a Glock 27...

They feel like a 2x4 or maybe like a 1x3.:D The Red Star grips are the best and they are not great. Grips make a gun in a lot of ways. It is a shame that there are not more aftermarket grips for the Maks.
Recoil is mild compared to .40S&W or .357mag. It recoils like a .380 out of a medium sized gun (Bersa/SIG). Very manegable recoil.
The sights are lousy! Tiny and hard to see! This not a long range gun so this is a moot point.
When they were $100, they were a steal but now you will pay around $200 for one. I think there are better guns out there for $200 now. Bersa, Star, used snubbies etc. The Maks have a rep for being dead on reliable and they deserve it! It is by far the most important thing I look for in a defensive gun and the Mak has it in spades. If for no other reason, get a Mak for the reliability factor.

I like the Pearce rubber grips personally. The Maks have a snappy recoil, but it is not bad at all. It is a blowback design afterall. I've found them to be accurate and dependable. A Russian Mak was my first real handgun purchase (I can't really count the Jennings J-22, though it was reliable - traded it for a Swedish 96 never looked back.)
Also own an E. German model. Would buy a Bulgarian if one came up. Best gun you can get for under $200.
